Nevertheless, Lehmann said the Australian selectors were still on the lookout for an allrounder of quality to ease the load on the rest of the attack while also making substantial middle order runs. He was happy to hear that Mitchell Marsh is soon to resume competitive bowling after shoulder surgery, while Marcus Stoinis is also thought to be in calculations.

"You'd always like one," Lehmann said. "At the moment some of the allrounders aren't knocking down the door like they should be. If you look at the past, when we had Shane Warne bowling at one end, you didn't have an allrounder but you had Steve and Mark Waugh who took [150] Test wickets, so there's an allrounder in itself. They're just handy when you have that long second innings more so than not, and if you get an injury during the game. At the moment it's ok, but you certainly look at it."

I guess, we will miss someone like Pandya, whose selection as the 5th bowler (4th pace bowler) allows us to play a spinner as one of the 4 specialist bowlers

A spinner will be useful if the grass dries out after first 2 days and the surface becomes good for batting. Still there would not be much point in playing more than 1 spinner, while playing 4 pacers could be optimal

Perth is likely to continue the tradition of being fast and bouncy:

"The Perth pitch is known to be the paciest and bouncy track in the world. However, now there is a new stadium in Perth where the second Test match between Australia and India will take place from 14 December. Meanwhile, the Pitch Curator of the WACA has confirmed that track is going to have pace and bounce, as has been the norm in Perth.

Thus, the fast bowlers will come into action. Australian pitches are known for their bounce and the new Perth Stadium which has a capacity of 60,000 people will stay true to the same. Meanwhile, the pitch curator Brett Sipthorpe confirmed that there would not be much help for the spinners.

"The mandate is for pace and bounce, and that's what I'll be attempting to achieve," Sipthorpe said as quoted by Sydney Morning Herald."

The squad size is 18. Of which:

  • Shaw is injured
  • Playing 2 spinners may not be possible apart from may be at Sydney so having 3 spinners in the squad appears like a luxury
  • Parthiv serves more like a back up WK at the moment unless he is asked to open in 2nd or 3rd test
