  1. 1. Who should open?

    • Continue with KL and Vijay
    • Shaw if available + 1 of KL / Vijay
    • Shaw if available + Rahane
    • Shaw if available + Innovation (Ashwin opens for e.g. so Ind plays an extra bowler)

Overall, a mixed bag as far as batting performance goes:

  • Openers were loose in the first inning. Forged a 63 runs partnership in the 2nd
  • Rahane flopped in the first. Was the 2nd highest scorer in the 2nd so gets a nod for the 2nd tests
  • Rohit was ok in the first. Flopped in the 2nd inning

From the squad:

  • Shaw is expected to be back
  • Vihari can bat well and bowl a few overs too if required

Pitch: Expected to be fast and bouncy

There is no other option for openers so they won't get dropped till Shaw is back. Only change i can see is rohit getting dropped for vihari.

If Shaw is not available / accommodated, the chances of playing the same 11 would be high

I think, we should persist with Vijay........ Has a proven track record still in AUS. Performed brilliantly in county, means his reflexes are intact as well.So should be given 1 more test.If Shaw is available he should replace Rahul because  I can't see Rahul   capitalizing  on a start. Shaw can also at the least get starts any way, so he should play

At Perth, I would prefer to go w/

Shaw (if unavailable, one of KL / Vijay)

Rahane

Pujara

Kohli

Vihari

Pant

X - > Rohit / Bhuvi / Kuldeep / Umesh (depending on conditions)

Ashwin (left handers in OZ 11)

The 3 pacers

You want to drop both openers and yet have the option of Rohit as #7??

Rohit should be first one out of the team.

Vijay appears to be struggling. While KL has been highly inconsistent so may have to drop in for Melbourne if he played at Perth .... Rahane has been inconsistent too. He looks good in one inning and can go missing for a few as well.  So in a way this is an experiment done proactively to see if Rahane can at least provide decent platform

Rohit did ok in the first inning so will give him another go if required

63 run opening stand. How is that non performing? They will come good.

First innings the opening partnership was of 3 runs.

Second innings the opening partnership was 63 runs.

There is not even a single 64 + runs  partnership by any of our opening pair in 2018.  63 was the highest of 2018 by our opening pairs.
