Ind ATG 11 batting

zen

Recommended Posts

If we were to select an ATG Ind 11 from retired players, the top 5 are likely to be:

Gavaskar

Sehwag

Dravid

Tendulkar

Laxman

Of the top 5, 4 played most of their cricket together in the 1995 to 2012 period. Theoretically, Ind ATG 11 is likely to play ATG 11 of other teams, which would include their best bowling attack. When we look at performance of these 4 vs strong attacks, their numbers (apart from Sehwag's) are relatively poor:

Against Aus with both McGrath and Warne, an example of a strong attack with variety, playing:

Our bowling attack (apart from the spinners) is not among the top 3 ATG attacks. Therefore, Ind's ATG 11 is not likely to be among the top 3 ATG sides. We had many of our ATG playing at the same time (Fab 4, Kumble and Srinath) but we did not dominate as much as we would have liked .... If bowling wins you tests, the batting prevents loses, and we have lost much more than what we would have liked :dontknow:

Can't include every bowler in the world. The sample size is enough esp with McGrath+Warne led attack being the benchmark

I also notice the "any of the" filter for South Africa while with Australia you're using the "all of the" filter for strategic reasons :winky:.

It is identified:  "Against SA with either Donald or Pollock or both leading the attack"

Sample size is relatively small for "all"  .... the selected bowlers -> Donald, McGrath, Pollock, Warne and Murali all started in 1990s

Why would I lose sleep over it. I have wasted enough time on these stats to know who did what against whom. Just commenting on the dubiously inconsistent filters that are being conveniently chosen here. I see that you're still reluctant to use the "any" filter with Australia. Wonder why that is :phehe:.

But let me post some stats that I am sure you'd appreciate:

In live matches against McGrath & Warne,

Tendulkar averaged 45.25 with 2 tons,
Lara averaged 42.16 with 2 tons.

In live matches against Donald & Pollock

Tendulkar averaged 42.87 with 1 ton,
Lara averaged 32.16 without a hundred.

In live matches against Wasim & Waqar,

Tendulkar averaged 39.71 with 1 ton,
Lara averaged 31.14 without a hundred.

In live matches against Ambrose & Walsh,

Tendulkar averaged 64.33 with no hundreds.

Against these ATG bowling pairs in live Tests,

Tendulkar scored 1357 runs @ 45.23 in 31 innings.

Lara scored 1658 runs @ 37.68 in 46 innings.

if you hadn't lost sleep over it, I do not see a reason to drag Lara in to this

Anyways, here are the numbers:

Note that vs relatively strong teams Aus, SA and Eng

  • Lara played 79 of his 131 tests, which is 60% of his tests, where he avgs 54 with a SR of 60
  • Tendulkar played 96 of his 200 tests, which is 48% of his tests, where he avgs 51 with a SR of 54. The avg of 51 is also helped by 16 not outs

Lara has played a higher percentage of his tests vs stronger teams. His avg vs these strong teams is higher than his career average. And he has fewer not outs!

McGrath + Warne led Aus is considered as a great example of a strong attack with variety. When both McGrath and Warne played:

How is Kapil or Shami even a debate? Kapil all the way.

Since it is a No.9 slot, it is a pure bowler's slot.

And that 11 is only for tests in Asia.

In tests in Asia ...

Shami averages 23 with a SR of 45

Kapil averages   29 with a SR of 60

Moreover, these days, pace bowling in Asia is primarily about reverse swing, and Shami is a much better exponent of that.

So, I should probably remove Kapil altogether for the tests in Asia.

if you hadn't lost sleep over it, I do not see a reason to drag Lara in to this

Anyways, here are the numbers:

Also note that vs relatively strong teams Aus, SA and Eng

  • Lara played 79 of his 131 tests, which is 60% of his tests, where he avgs 54 with a SR of 60
  • Tendulkar played 96 of his 200 tests, which is 48% of his tests, where he avgs 51 with a SR of 54. The avg of 51 is also helped by 16 not outs

Thank you! :winky:

I included Lara because the "intent" of this thread was pretty clear :giggle:. Not sure why you added that wall of text again when I have already shown Tendulkar having a better stats than Lara against all of these ATG pairs in live Tests. And you might want to check England's record during Lara's career. They were certainly not a top 3 side for the best part. India and Pakistan were both better in terms of W/L ratio from 90-06.

But you are welcome to post the same wall of text with your trademark dubious filters in response to this comment :winky:.
