rtmohanlal
It is almost a certain that the on going Perth test is going to be lost, if nothing unusual happens. And by this time some conclusions could be reached based on the performances. Openers can't be relied upon to at least see of the new ball and put a descent partnership of 50 runs.Tail enders can't put on the board even 10 runs even on the occasions the team needs them the most.Only 3 batsmen are there who can be relied upon at the least in minimum levels, namely Kohli,Pujara & Rahane. This being the case what needs to be the eleven. My eleven Pujara // NEEDS TO OPEN , any way he is coming in the first 5 overs at the crease for sure Shaw Rahane Kohli Pant Vihari Jadeja Ashwin Kuldeep Bhuvi Bumrah would go with 5 bowlers of which 4 can bat. Including Vihari there are 6 bowling options .So if any one proves a bit ineffective , there are other options to be relied upon.Any way spray gun Umesh is of no worth & it is a given that at least 1 seamer ends up being far effective from the others in cases of '4 seamer attacks'. That being the case 'strengthening batting with more reliable openers and bowlers who can bat far better' is a far better option. Thoughts Link to comment

Frustrated
Does anyone hv any update on Shaw's injury ? BTW,. If he comes back in the 3rd test and scores even 30 odd runs, half of our problems would be solved. Link to comment

And keep in mind , the effectiveness of this strategy lies in the fact that if any one of them's bowling suits the pitch , that bowler can be bowled as much as per required.AUS is a team who traditionally plays seam more well than spinners. So that 'unfamiliarity' element can always become some sort of 'trouble in general' for their batsmen, especially a china man like Kuldeep. And Ashwin in general is such a threat to left handers in general. So that means, if 'Ashwin & Kuldeep' do the most damage , other bowlers too can feed off them and compliment them well. And batting too can be improved a lot. Link to comment

zen
If nothing remarkable happens in our 2nd innings at Perth .... I would go with the below for Melbourne (from those in the squad and assuming everyone is fit) Rahane / Ashwin Shaw Pujara Kohli Vihari Ashwin / Rahane Pant Kuldeep Ishant Shami Bumrah Edited December 17, 2018 by zen Link to comment

I simply don't understand why you are defending Pujara at any cost. Isn't it the team that needs to be given the utmost priority?? Rahane opening, means a disastrous start guaranteed because he does not possess the technique to withstand the new ball. One batsman was there in Vijay , but he unfortunately regressed a lot for the disappointment of all.Now the best option remaining is Pujara. Link to comment
