So Jadeja is the first choice in over seas series going forward?

Difficult choice tbh. If the pitch is not doing anything I still prefer Ashwin. Remember the 1st innings in 1st test. Took 3 top order wickets with no help from pitch.

If the pitch has rough like today Jaddu is better cause Ashwin who bowls with such patience when there is no help from the pitch somehow loses it when the pitch is doing something.

never hits the rough and tries too much

Batting Ashwin is slightly better especially to build partnerships. Fielding anyday Jadeja.

It is a good headache to have

i have always been saying this ... we don't need  7 batsmen in the team including  'Pant' .Batsmen like Rahane,Vihari,Rohit ,Vijay,Rahul  they all have been far off from adequate for one reason or the other  for a long time now. That being the case 5 batsmen + wk + 5 'bowlers( based on conditions) of which 3 or 4  can bat also'  is lot more effective. Hence Jadeja,Ashwin , Bhuvi  would need to play the most based on conditions.

Gosh I hope so. What else does he need to do to to stake his claim as first choice spinner ??

Unlike Ashwin, he's out bowled the opposition's lead spinner in Eng as well as Aus. Plus he is a great fielder & is quite fit, ignore the theories bewda cooks up.

Ashwin took 6 wickets with better economy. Jadeja took 5. I don't think Jadeja did anything extraordinary to become the first choice spinner

Good point. Additionally, his partnership with Pujara saved the Adelaide test for India.

Pound for pound I feel fully fit Ashwin is a better test cricketer. More skilled as a bowler and tighter batting technique.

However, Jadeja's fitness and excellent outcricket narrows the gap between two of them significantly.

Ashwin & Jadeja both can play.their sum of parts(batting + bowling)   can be better  than what 2 specialists can provide .

for instance in the 2 tests Jadeja played in ENG+AUS he avg:s 38 from 4 inns with the bat & 32.08 with the ball  taking 12 wkts.

As per general perception 25 is a great bowl avg: & 50 is a great batting avg:

So Jadeja avg:s 32 in bowling means he is 7 off from a great bowl avg:, which is equivalent of '14 off from a great batting avg:.In other words this 32   bowl avg: is equivalent to 50-14=  36 bat avg:

Means from a pure specialist(say batting)  point of view  his combined avg: is 38 + 36 = 74  .

Similarly Ashwin  scored 246 runs from 12 inns  in his  recent last 7 tests in SENA. An avg: of 20.5.Also he picked 24 wkts from these  7 tests at 30.17. Means from a specialist batsman point of view his avg: is  20.5 +( 50 -  (30.17-25)*2) = 60.16

So Jadeja avg:s 74 & Ashwin avg:s 60.16  from the point of view of a specialist batsman. That is far more than 2 specialist batsman  each

can provide  for the team.

On a different wicket where Lyon got 8! This happened twice in consecutive games for him in Southampton & Adelaide.

In contrast, Jadeja has better figures than Moeen/Rashid for the Oval test & Lyon for MCG.

Not hard to do an apples to apples comparison.

That is not how it works. This is the 3rd test and our batsmen have just got better at playing lyon. Just because We played Lyon better doesn't mean Jadeja outbowled him.

Compare the pitches. 1st innings in MCG had more rough than Adelaide. And  Jaddu didn't exactly run through the side as predicted

Lol, added "as predicted" from your imagination.

Kick out Rahane or Vihari so we can have Ashwin and Jadeja. Between them they score more runs and take more wickets overseas than the other two would.

Pujara Kohli and Rahane form the backbone of our test batting. Agreed, of these Rahane is the most useless and unreliable fellow but dropping him ATM is neither sensible nor possible.

Yep, we suddenly got better at playing Lyon just after we got worse at Perth. And the prediction stuff :phehe:
