Middle-order batsman:- Pujara,Kohli & Vihari as first choice.Bring in Shubman Gill. Drop Rohit and play him in LOIs only. Rahane should go back to domestics to find his mojo.He's a shadow of his previous self. WK/Batsman:- Pant deserves a longer run.Saha should be the reserve keeper when he's fit. Seam bowling all-rounder:- Don't have anyone except Hardik for now. Spinner:- Ashwin,Jadeja,Kuldeep. Seamers:- Bumrah,Shami,Ishant,BK + 1 from the barrage of exciting seamers we have in domestics.My choice is Rajpoot for now.Drop useless Umesh. Not really Can get fit on the tour for 2nd or 4th test Example. If kohli injured before tour starts but can make 3rd or 4th test you dont take him? Bumrah ( Strike bowler cum Enforcer pacer ) ... Backup maybe Avesh ( Mavi maybe ready next season after some more FC games ) 2. Ishant ( Accurate steady pacer who can move the ball ) ... Backups Bhuvi, Rajpoot, Saini 3. Shami ( Quick bowler cum wicket taker ) ... Backups maybe Avesh, Siraj, Saini, Aniket C, Umesh. * -- Bhuvi becomes first choice strike bowler in movement friendly places like England, Eden Gardens etc. Replace a pacer with the same kind of pacer, to keep the composition of the attack ok. Agree with everything except Umesh.He has lost it.Needs to bowl 140+ again to be effective.Right now he's spraying the ball at 135ish. Link to comment

Hopefully we win this test and secure our number 1 ranking as well. I think post this series focus will shift to the ODI WC. Just because Shami, Ishant and Bumrah have been so great does not mean everyone is also great - breaking into Test cricket is hard (unless you are an Englishman bowling in England). Look at how clearly worse Umesh was - and he took 6 against West Indies. Ishant has been so good recently - excellent seam position and very accurate. Even Shami is a class above - because of how deadly some of his spells are - when he gets the reverse swing. Link to comment

What I want to say is ... the team should not replace an accurate low economy pacer like Ishant of 2018 ( who allows the other more aggressive pacers like Bumrah and Shami to attack freely ) with a pacer like say Siraj, who takes wickets but leak runs. Someone like a Rajpoot or a Bhuvi will control runs similar to Ishant of 2018. Similarly, a Bumrah can't be replaced by say a Bhuvi ... because Bumrah provides the extra pace and bounce in the attack. Someone like an Avesh Khan might do the same.
