Rishabh Pant is a “champion cricketer in the making”, who is very much in the mix for the 2019 India’s World Cup campaign for his ability to seamlessly switch formats, says chairman of selector MSK Prasad.

After being “rested” for the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand, there have been conjectures about his place in the England-bound squad but Prasad set the record straight about selection committee’s plans about talents such as Pant and Shubman Gill.

“Rishabh Pant played three T20s and four Test matches in Australia and that had an impact on his body. He needed complete rest for two weeks and then we will take a call on how many matches he will play against England Lions. Let me put it straight, he is very much in our World Cup plans. He is a champion player in the making and even he is not fully aware the kind of potential he has,” Prasad said.

Prasad is happy that Pant is now understanding what skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri expect of him and Sydney was a testimony to that.

“Ravi and Virat had advised him to put his head down and respect the match situation and he did exactly that. He proved that he can switch gears seamlessly. When we picked him for Tests, experts were sceptical about his keeping but 11 catches in a Test in England, record dismissals in Australia series proves that selection committee is vindicated,” the former India keeper stated.

The head of selection committee is equally excited about young Shubman Gill as he feels that the enormously talented Punjab batsman is now ready for international cricket.

“Shubman is comfortable both opening the innings as well as playing in the middle-order. For New Zealand series, we are looking at him as the reserve opener behind Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma). I won’t comment if he will make it to World Cup but he was phenomenal as an opener for India A in New Zealand.

“We have discussed with Rahul (Dravid), that Shubman is ready for international cricket. The best part is the clutch of A tours which has made all these players battle ready for the biggest challenge,” the eloquent Prasad said.

The likes of Hanuma Vihari, Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Khaleel Ahmed have all been impressive in international cricket and that makes Prasad very happy.

“I regularly discuss the progress of the players with Ravi and Rahul. Have a look at how we have planned a player’s progression from Ranji Trophy, A team to senior team. Look at Hanuma Vihari and Mayank Agarwal. They don’t look intimidated when thrown into the deep end of the pool,” said Prasad.

For him and his colleagues, one of the biggest plus points has been taking the risk of unleashing two wrist spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the ODI set-up, replacing Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

“We received flak when we had replaced world’s No 1 and 2 spinner (as per ICC Rankings) with two young wrist spinners. One and half years down the line, they (Kuldeep and Chahal) have had contribution in at least 70 percent of India’s limited overs wins,” the satisfaction was evident in his voice.

While Kuldeep is now firmly in the Test team mix after his five-wicket haul in Sydney but Prasad reckons that he still has “some way to go” as Ashwin and Jadeja are still the country’s premier spinners in the longest format.

The chairman of selectors also spoke about how they had to go against the popular sentiment when they rested Jasprit Bumrah for the two Tests against the West Indies.

“Trust me, had Jasprit played those two Tests against West Indies, he wouldn’t have played all four Test against Australia. The support staff has really monitored him well. He is now fitter and stronger and with Bharat Arun continuously working with him, he has improved as a bowler,” Prasad was all praise for him.

“But a lot of credit should go to Jasprit because Arun gave him a plan but it was up to him to make the effort to implement the plan. He has really worked hard. When we first picked him, so many were sceptical whether it was prudent to pick a white ball specialist but at the end of the year, we can all see the results.”

Mohammed Shami’s peak fitness during the season and his ability to bowl at the same speed during third and fourth spell could be attributed to the Bengal speedster’s new-found love for following fitness regimen.

“Shami was one such bowler, who has of late started enjoying fitness routines, which wasn’t the case earlier. Trainer Shankar Basu has prepared an exclusive chart for him, which he follows religiously now.

“His craft as a fast bowler was never doubted but it was his fitness that used to let him down. If you saw, he was bowling 140 plus in the last Tests in England and Australia. Shami’s fitness has been the biggest plus for him,” Prasad concluded.

‘He has that X-factor in him’ - Harbhajan Singh compares Rishabh Pant to Adam Gilchrist

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/india-vs-australia-he-has-that-x-factor-in-him-harbhajan-singh-compares-rishabh-pant-to-adam-gilchrist/story-vgzWW0XqdzcABtpRpU7uNL.html

“Rishabh Pant has that X-factor in him, which Adam Gilchrist had,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by Indian Today. “He has the potential to hit six sixes, I am not talking about six sixes in an over but if he plays 30 balls he has the ability to hit at least six sixes, which can be game-changing.”

“I think Rishabh Pant is a must in the Indian team because if we lose three early wickets, we need to have a power-hitter lower down the order. I think his inclusion will not only strengthen India’s batting line-up but also fix the middle-order issues,” he added.

Gill the reserve opener will be on bench thru out the NZ tour while Rayudu, Dhoni, and Kaarthik will be working really hard to maintain their 20 average at 70 strike rate.

that seems about right, especially the latter duo.

He won't retire/resign before the WC no matter what happens. He hasn't gone through the embarrassment in the last couple of years only to quit before the WC.

Agree. But can't understand what he gains by just playing another world cup amidst all humiliation. He's had a good career until about 2015-16. Why not just hang up and move on? Sticking on despite humiliation is baffling. I'm pretty sure he knows he's done too.

Compare line ups Sachin,Sehwag,Gambhir,Kohli,Yuvraj ,Raina and Dhoni to present lineup of Rohit, Dhawan ,Kohli and garbage. How can this useless guy MSK expect India to win. I forgot about non bowlers this moron has given inspite of having such talented youngsters.

Pant, Gill,Shaw along with three young fast bowlers are a must for this team.Get Bhuvi out of this team along with dead weights like Jadeja along with him.

This is such a useless odi side. These useless morons are wasting the talents of one of the best top three batsmen in history of the game.

2015 we had Dhoni advocating likes of Mohit sharma and screwing Indian team and  now we have to this useless guy MSK doing the same to the team even though he has such talent pool to choose players .

Like a lot of sportsmen he wants to leave on a high and doesn't realize that he's finished. Which is fine as it should be the TM's call to leave him out but they either have no power to drop him or have a raging hard-on for "experience". Anyhoo I think he will leave after the WC as zillat bardaasht karne ki bhi limit hoti hai.

I am not sure if he will leave even after 2019 WC. he may target 2023 WC. his "official" age will be about the same as what jayasuria and misbah were in their last matches - hence, MSD may claim that the older he grows, the more "experience" (and tummy) he brings to the table.

I think in past few months they're finally getting their act together by picking Shaw, Mayank and Gill, Shankar

We just have to hope Rayudu dk etc suck as badly as Vijay and Rahul to make a change inevitable

Well Misbah became a regular only in his 30s plus the padosi talent pool was mediocre. So him playing into his 40s was somewhat understandable. Jaya played his last WC at the age of 38. Dhoni playing until 2023 WC at the age of 42 seems unrealistic looking at the volume of cricket he has already played and the number of alternatives available now.

I think he got booed twice so far. There are already few booed videos of Dhoni on You Tube. By the end of the career there would be few more additions on you tube.

the remark wasn't meant to be partly serious, partly tongue-in-cheek. however, one cannot underestimate dhoni's pull on many sectors of indian cricket - he has fingers in all pies.

When Lords crowd booed him last time....he defended next couple of balls to troll crowd more :cantstop:

So he ain't the one distracted by booing. MS will play the world cup bcoz there is too much sponsor pressure. Onus is on Virat-Shatri to build a team around Dhoni to ensure minimum damage. Pant should still play IMHO, albeit as a batsman.

Dhawan
Rohit
Shaw/Agarwal/Rahul
Kohli
Gill/Jadhav/Pant
Dhoni
Pandya/Jadeja
Kuldeep
Shami
Bhuvi
Bumrah

This is getting weirder by the day, now Pant has been rested, as per our chief selector he has played 4 tests and 3 T20Is in Australia and that has had an an impact on his body, what does Prasad think, is Pant that fragile that he cannot last a bloody effing season of cricket, he is 21 for crying out loud, he should be playing as much as possible.

Even if he is rested for 2 weeks, why not pick him for New Zealand tour , why England Lions, I am sorry, is there some A team's world cup that we are not aware off, that Pant is playing for A team and not senior team.

I can understand them resting a fast bowler like Bumrah, but this is something else, are these slectors themselves sure what the hell they want to do, or are they too effing scared to drop Dhoni and get Pant in.

If he is part of the world cup plans when does he get into the team ? After the world cup ? Or is he part of the 2023 world cup ?

If spewing non sense was an Olympic sport, Prasad would win the gold medal hands down, because he thinks people are such idiots that he can spew any nonsense in the media and everyone will happily buy his nonsensical things.

We all know why Pant will be played as less as possible till World Cup. Already Pant doing good in tests had people making noise about dropping Dhoni. Can't risk it in thala' s bread and butter format ODIs.

Are these  people who claim to be dhoni fan are his fans or haters? i mean how can someone as fan would want their favorite player to play with this pathetic strike rate. If i was fan i would expect him to retire quickly and save his reputation.
