We need to talk about SENA

A timely piece on the on-going SENA obsession...

SC is rather obsessed with SENA, that's true. As for SENA, they value doing well in SC, but not to the exclusion of everything else. for example, I think Eng would rate winning against Ozzies in Aus higher than winning against Ind in Ind.

SENA teams do value iconic performances in sub content e.g. KPs knock in Mumbai 2012 and Steve Waugh called India the final frontier. WTF else do you want?

No way are they held to the same standard though.

Like he mentions in the article when was the last time someone put together a list of batsmen who average over 40 in sub-con and WI?

This ain't about one off tours or performances. But more about career stats being grouped based on SENA by not only the fans but increasingly by the media where quite a few subcontinent players with extra-ordinary overall records get under-rated based on their modest record in SENA while while relatively poor performances by SENA players in Asia don't seem to attract the same level of criticism. Not to mention how it under-values performances by subcontinent players in non-SENA countries. A classic example being Sehwag called an HTB even though he averages around 45 away from home against non-minnows.

And before our historic test series win in Pakistan, India would have valued winning in Pakistan more. That's just a historical rivalry, nothing to do with SENA/non-SENA. England would value winning a test series in India more than winning in RSA or NZ.

there's been many articles about Warne's bowling average in India, Ricky pontings batting average in India. It's well documented that Jimmy Anderson is HTB.

1.   Away tour performances, against big teams, are held in much higher esteem than home performances.  Applies to players of every country.

2.   Incidentally,  India,  SENA and Pakistan are the bigger teams now.  And we don't play Pakistan.  Hence SENA countries are what are left.

3.   West Indies tours, in the 1971 to 2000 period, used to be more important for us than most other countries.   Similar case with Pakistan tours between 1978  to  2007.

4.  I am sure a team like Australia value results on a tour to India much higher than say a NZ tour.

Agree SENA is overused at times...but it deserves the importance it gets when talking about Asian players.

I don't think Asian performance isn't discussed for SENA players. It's often mentioned when discussing about their greatness. We will of course hear more about SENA since our discussion revolves around India . Go to an Australian forum and you might find the same thing about Asia.
