Currently, which opener(s) can play such roles?

Man, Lanka of the late 90s and early 00s was so scary :fear1:

Look at that Indian bowling they were bowling full tosses and leg stump line. Venky prasad was the most useless bowler ever to play for India apart from sohail wicket he hasn’t done much. I remember when McGrath bowled he got hit couple of times on his guard and his arm was broke in 2003 worldcup.

When they scored less than 50 as openers

Jayasurya 289 innings out of 383 innings, average 17, SR 78 . FAILED in 75% innings :((

Gilchrist 190 innings out of 259 innings, average 19, SR 84, FAILED in 73% innings :((:((

Sehwag 163 innings out of 212 innings, average 20, SR 93, FAILED in 77% innings :((:((:((

Such a useless set of openers who failed in 3 out of 4 innings. Teams should have asked them to vacate their spots rather than letting them to play for so long

wait they scored 10 ball 15 runs when they failed so how can you say they are useless?

Those kind of knocks helped the team immensely. Openers of India, especially THAT useless opener from India have to learn so much from these legends (all of whom average 20-24 points lower than his average as an opener and 4-11 points higher average).

These swashbuckling openers like jayasurya bullied poor indian trundlers and avg spinners many times. They played like hack munro & guptill does in current era. Would stand no chance against current indian attack.

See sehwag's attacking cricket against Australia with avg of 21. :hatsoff: That's what we need from our current openers. Quick fire 20s. :phew:

Venky owned Pak in 2 WC matches when they had a very good batting line up, was tremendous in tests in RSA . He wasn't the most useless bowler to play for India, not among the best either, decent for our standards.

In tests he has a number of 5 wicket hauls and even a 10 wicket haul in Durban.

Sehwags extremely poor returns against top teams in odis has to be the biggest black mark in his career. He has probably played for the galleries the most than any other top quality batsman.

That was a time when many players were averaging in the 30-40 range including Yuvi, Raina, Kaif, VVS ....

Don’t understand the selection of these openers to be honest. Missing gayle, Greatbatch, mccullum etc.

Gayle SR was around 85 iirc, Greatbatch's was much less, McCullum averaged around 30-33 as an opener iirc

This op picks so many random stats to prove his point. I can make any great player look avg if i have to do by using random stats. Failed in this % of innings and that crap. Players are not going to make like 70%+ of 50+ scores in their odi career.

The benchmark is 1 out of 3 at least. Not many come close to 1 out of 2 which means 50%
