What happened to Shreyas Iyer?

Recommended Posts

I admit I didn't follow the matches he played, neither have I seen him much in IPL. My limited knowledge about him comes from news reports, match links, ICF, highlight videos etc. But he seems like a candidate for our middle order. 5 innings, 210 runs, avg 42, SR 96.33 sure looks good on paper. One of those innings was on a Dharamsala greentop where we were bundled out for 112...we are never getting pitches like that in the WC. Remove that knock and he averages 50+ with SR 100+. And it seems he is a good fielder. His list A (and FC) numbers are pretty good especially the SR, and his domestic form has been good in recent years.

Why do you think he was sidelined? Did you guys notice any glaring technical weakness that rules out success at the highest level? Was he being selfish, mentally shot or a dick, as in any behavioral problems? Or did he have any documented altercation with Kohli and coach?

Not saying he is a Lara reincarnate but how bad must you be when TM considers Rahane, Rayudu, DK as better alternatives for that #4 spot? And he is a natural top middle order batsman in domestics unlike Rahul, that must be taken into account. Perfect age too, neither an oldie nor a kid, could have been a long term investment.

He was unnecessarily dropped post the SA tour , another one of those Kohli and TM victims. He should still be part of WC squad.

So there wasn't any glaring weakness, he performed acceptably and they still dropped him, dumb fukcers

Remember how post his debut, Raina was such a joke against the short ball. But skipper Dravid and later Dhoni persisted with him, groomed him and we reaped the results after 2009-10. Donkey Kohli has no sense of long term planning.

Technique doesnt really matter in the middle overs of an odi game .He reminds me of morgan ,has good hand eye coordination and power but like so many of these batsmen cant bowl at all, which mean they are all fighting for that 1 slot ie no 4.

Also,Wasn’t it Nair who was sent back to India from England while Hanuma Vihari was called in?

Have said this multiple times.. this guy was the best candidate for the no 4 slot.. can accelerate, play long innings.. more importantly has the aggressive attitude

i have never seen him play at slow pace even in first class cricket

Guess not having the secondary skill plus sudden rise of Rayudu somehow pegged him back.

I think Rayudu got into the team on the back of CSK performances. He has his first good season in yrs there and then he gets fastracked into the India side;

On these pattas, Iyer at #4 would have been an upgrade over whoever we have atm, someone who effortlessly strikes at 100 in 50 overs matches and a murderer of spin bowling. Also based on List A records, he seems to have found the correct tempo in this format, something that eludes Pant. And did I mention 'a fine fielder as well'?

If these guys want to get into the side learn to bowl :) Atleast decent off spin or leg spin. That is the best way you can come in.  Someone like Tendulkar never needed to learn bowling, sehwag, Ganguly the same Dravid did the keeping for 2003 world cup. Yuvraj did bowl. These guys don't just step outside their comfort zone. On that score i like Ashwin. Even when he batted at 8 he took his batting seriously (albeit he started his career as an opener but for his state still a lower order batsman) did better than some of the specialists.

That is what is making Indian team for both test and odi one dimesional teams. I don't see any young batsmen who have some ability as bowlers either in domestic cricket.Nor do we see any big hitters.Yuvraj was our last hitter and there is reason why him and Raina kept getting chances.

Exactly. Tendulkar at 18 bowled 41st over to the last pair and helped India tie the game. Then hero cup. Most importantly in the epic eden garden test he picked up 3 of the key wickets in the 2nd innings. Sehwag has done his bit with ball as well. Whatever happened to Rohit sharma the "hatrick holder" why didn't he pursue his bowling afterwards.

Rohit became too fat and too lazy.We can blame Kohli all we want but he is saddled with bloody one dimesional players .Bumrah who is the one one who can justify his place a specialist bowler.Even Australia in their peak wouldn't have carried four Mcgraths. It ruins total team balance.

We have some guys calling Rohit Sharma is problem.

Huge credit to Pandya for taking both departments seriously. It is very very hard to be a fast bowling all rounder. you spend a lot of energy bowling fast. HE also tries to be quick on the field. Lot of hardwork has gone into it.

Unlike KLR and KKN, SI has a legitimate grouse.  Unfortunately, his two best ODI innings were both overshadowed - one by a Rohit Sharma double-hundred special and the other by a Dhawan 100.  After those two innings, he tapered off, but not so much that he is not even in the reckoning anymore.  He has been scoring heavily in all forms of cricket since then and deserves strong consideration.

There was some talk of him being too big for his shoes, but he has shown his maturity by captaining an IPL team to a playoff appearance.  Not an easy task for a 24 y.o. player trying to establish himself.

Bottom line:  Along with Agarwal, Gill and Shaw, he is likely to be in the next group of good Indian batsmen.

not sold on Pandya yet, I don't know if he has ability to score 100 when chips are down or take wickets when needed, his bowling honestly stinks. He is the best we got.

Played poorly against pace. Rahul Shankar pant better at that. But i think his attitude and match awareness are beyond any young guy well beyond Rahul and Shankar who are same age group so he will play for India for sure. The way he leads DC is just amazing, bright youngster.

another victim of  team management incompetency. Iyer played 5 matches  , avg:ed 42 at high str: .He was only 23 then and  got dropped. So he showed glimpse of his abilities.Instead of persisting with that rookie team management dropped him and brought in Rayudu at 33+ age.Captain gave an eye catching interview  and proclaimed that he has found the no:4 spot in Rayudu .Now with the all important  tournament about to begin  there is neither Iyer nor Rayudu. Mayank Agarwal deserved a chance in ODI  more than several youngsters as per his LIST A stats at least before 25. That didn't happen either.
