Credit where due....we all have to accept that he is a master tactician in shorter formats. I am amazed how he motivates his CSK boys to perform at top level year after year. Every player looks hungry under him, including the has beens like Bhajji.

This man has led Indian team for 10 years with immense success...CSK for a decade and yet finds a way to beat all teams consistently. Its not a fan boy thread but a genuine observation.

The main reason for CSK's success is that he sticks to the same 11 for pretty much the whole tournament and backs them fully. Plus, the team is not filled with either complete youngsters or big hitters who can fizzle out like Gayle, ABD etc.

If you see last season too they chose people like Faf du plessis, Watson etc. experienced players over shelling out big bucks for youngsters or big pinch hitters like Gayle, Lewis etc.

And both Faf and Watson saved Dhoni's ass in SF and Final single handedly last time. You can clearly see the issue with even juggernauts like Mumbai choosing someone like Yuvraj or Pollard out of favoritism rather than needing to have the most well-rounded 11. The teams that won historically like KKR and SRH were teams that relied on one performer like a Rashid Khan to finish off close games but still had a very strong and balanced 11 when they won and no player was taken just because they were a pinch hitter or because they exhausted their budget on star players so had to have weak links.

This was the issue with RCB also, they stacked their top 4 with all top batsmen Gayle, ABDV, Kohli etc. that once the top 2 were dismissed the middle order was done for. Kohli has done the same mistake for team india too, stacking top 3 and making middle order weak where if 2 wickets fall, we are in a massive disadvantage.

they play like a team, other teams are about individuals

If u check Last yr IPL - every game someone stood-up and yes few were consistent throughout

Same this yr

Bhajji, tahir 1st game

Watson in 2nd

Today- dhoni, tahir

soon ull see everyone chipping n playing a key role in winning games

Also its one the team that has given very clear defined roles to players

Look at RCB- every game openers are changing

MI- sending wrong signals to young players

  • Kishen did well last yr is being benched for washed out players like yuvi
  • SKy did so well last yr and now has to leave his position for captain who hasnt been 50% effective how sky was
  • Pollard still owns a place over youngsters like kishen

RR- a young players like tripathi has to sacrifice his position for Rahane n smith

KXIP- i think they have had more captains then seasons

Capataincy is a lot about perceptions. CSK has always been a gun team. And along with Srinivasan and Meiyappan blessings they were/are guaranteed a spot in the final at least. The same Dhoni when had a weak team like Rising Pune SuperGiants could do nothing. The next year Smith took more or less similar team to the finals.
