India retains test championship mace

Recommended Posts

India have ended as the top-ranked Test team for the third year running. With 116 points, they were eight clear of second-placed New Zealand on the cut-off date of April 1. They will receive a purse of US$ one million and the Test Championship Mace again.

In the period in question, India enjoyed success at home, beating Afghanistan in a one-off Test and West Indies 2-0. They endured mixed returns overseas, losing 4-1 in England but beat Australia 2-1 for their first-ever Test series win in the country.

"Retaining the ICC Test Championship Mace once again is something we are all really proud of," India captain Virat Kohlisaid in a statement. "Our team has been doing well across formats but it gives us extra pleasure to come out on top of the Test rankings. We all know of the importance of Test cricket and of how only the best can prosper in the format.

"Our team has a lot of depth and I am sure this will stand us in good stead once the ICC World Test Championship commences later this year. That is again something we are really looking forward to as it adds more context to Test match cricket."

I expect us to continue leading the charts for another 2-3 years at least by which time we should leapfrog past Poms to number 3 position. Aus and WI are way ahead though, surpassing them will take a long long time. WI can still be surpassed but Australia will probably lead the chart for eternity.

Will the rankings continue when the WTC starts?

I read somewhere that everything will start from fresh when WTC starts. I hope BCCI forces the ICC to adopt both sets of rankings, 1 for each WTC cycle and the other in line with the traditional ICC ranking system. Goras/Pak!s will oppose tooth and nail but BCCI shouldn't budge.

Tennis (both ATP and WTA) has the same feature, the traditional ranking which has been in place for decades and another one called Race to Singapore/Shenzhen/Shanghai/London (depending on who hosts the World Tour Finals/Year Ending Championship) ranking which decides the contestants for WTF/YEC and then resets for the next cycle. WTC is similar to the WTF/YEC of tennis, only that it will be a biennial cycle and 2 qualifying spots for the finals instead of 8 (tennis). Don't see why they can't accommodate both rankings. There is a long history associated with ICC rankings, who knows how long a fad like WTC will last?
