Ideal squad for the WC19

This is not the squad likely to be chosen by selectors but the squad based on:

  • The form and potential of the players
  • The flavor of cricket that India should display

  • Batsmen + WKs: Shaw, Agarwal, Kohli, Pandya, Pant and KL (can also serve as the reserve WK if required until a backup is drafted in)
  • Pace Bowlers: Bumrah, Shami and Saini
  • Spinners (Mystery/Wrist): Kuldeep, Chahal and Gopal
  • Open Positions (13, 14 and 15):
  1. Batsmen + WKs: 2 from Rohit, Dhawan, Dhoni, DK, etc., ....
  2. Bowlers: 1 from Bhuvi, Krishna, etc., ....

Cant send two debutant openers to the WC man, not least because Rohit and Dhawan are world class.

I don’t buy into such theories, buddy! .... Don’t forget there can be various version of such theories including for WKs, spinners, #X, and so on .... so it is a discussion for another day .... as for the players that you mentioned, look at “open positions” where they are listed as options

Shaw, Agrawal and Gopal? What exactly have they done to suddenly get into the WC 15?

If IPL is the benchmark, may as well put Iyer, Sarfaraz, Parthiv Patel, Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana in as well. And while we are at it, add Ashwin, Bhajji, Sandeep Sharma, Deepak Chahar and Kaul too.

No matter what , Rohit and Dhawan are our best openers and probably in the whole world too. People going gaga over their IPL performances should know that 50 over Cricket is a different beast altogether. So they are / should be our defacto openers for the world cup.

Ideal squad for the WC should be

Virat Kohli (c)

Shikhar Dhawan

Rohit Sharma

KL Rahul

Dinesh Karthik

Kedar Jadav

MS Dhoni

Vijay Shankar

Hardik Pandya

Kuldeep Yadav

Yuzvendra chahal

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Jasprit Bumrah

Mohammed Shami

Deepak chahar

You can argue about chahar but he is the best of the current sorry lot. He may not have pace but has more control than Siraj , kaul, Thakur, Umesh etc. He can be like to like replacement of Bhuvi.

DK over Pant shouldn't raise too many eyebrows now. Pant has proved again that he's just an overrated hack who slogs his way out of trouble. DK, if used properly can be proper match winner in ODIs . Rest pick themselves.

Only 15 years and counting for that to happen to DK. Between Pant and DK, if there is a hack and a tried and tested failure in ODIs, it is DK who is good for 20s and 30s.

My final 15 after closing all positions, along with the starting 11 for the first 3 games vs SA, Aus and NZ:

Shaw

KL

Kohli

Agarwal

Pant

Pandya

Jadhav

Kuldeep

Saini / Shami

Chahal / Gopal  (additional spinner vs the 3 SENA teams unless surface demands another pacer)

Bumrah

14. Dhawan / Rohit (flip the coin)

15. Krishna

Notes:

  • Based on current form and potential
  • Horses on the rise have been given preference over horses on the decline
  • Impressed by Mayank and Shaw's form. Have performed brilliantly for India at the international level and also have the perfect game for LOIs
  • KL showed relatively good hitting form recently and can also serve as a reserve WK in the interim if required
  • Shankar misses out as he has a tendency to implode under pressure
  • Bhuvi can be a decent option as he can bat a bit too but want to avoid trundlers where possible. Additionally, Bhuvi could go for big runs on flat pitches in Eng. Krishna though relatively inexperienced has shown a good variety in his armor including pace, and ability to take on challenges like in the super over for e.g.
  • No place for Left Arm Slow bowlers, who I tend to avoid in general unless can play as ARs, like Jadeja
  • Have gone with an extra wrist/mystery spinner as these type of spinners tend to depend on form and confidence level too, so want that cushion of an additional option in the squad in case someone like Chahal loses the plot

The squad lacks some popular/automatic (per fans) picks but will be relatively more effective and therefore ideal!
