Players that do not inspire confidence atm

zen

Recommended Posts

  • Dhawan -> on and off
  • Rohit and Rayudu -> less said the better
  • Shankar -> implodes under pressure
  • Jadhav -> inconsistency could be his middle name. bowling is not a novelty anymore. fielding is a liability

Can't have 4 of these together in any decent 11 .... Tomorrow, April 15th, fans could be in for a disappointment if selectors do not act proactively :nervous:

IPL/T20 isn't a good judge for 50 over cricket.

ABDV one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time was shambolic in T20s, same with Dhoni, Ponting, Angelo, Dhawan, Ross Taylor, Boult, Kuldeep, Kane, Smith, Amla etc.

Russell /Karthik/Lynn/Narine/Munro/Samuels/Malik/<random WI players> OTOH guns in T20, **** in ODIs.

Disappointed with Shankar.. Had a good number of opportunities this IPL to make impact.. Also, poor from SRH to play Bhui ahead of Shankar today.. The RRR was 12.xx when Shankar came in.

When Sankar is batting, you can feel as if he is going to get out. In the game vs MI, he threw it away too .... And he is not supposed to be out of form

Does relatively well, when playing under less pressure .... Needs to pull up his socks!

He looks solid when he rotates strike, and looks to consolidate. He gets out when he plays the big shots unnecessarily. Needs to show more temperament.

A good point but cricket is too complex to be reduced to generalities. The discussion would also depend upon players being considered, what is being "observed", the ability of a person to connect the dots (what may be difficult for one, may not be for other. Therefore leadership in sports is valued), and so on .... for e.g.

a) Quite a few players do well in both formats, therefore if Gayle is doing well in ODIs, you can say that he will do well in T20s, and vice versa. If a Kohli is struggling for form, he will struggle in domestic too. And if he returns to form in one format, he is likely to do well in other formats too. And in-form Warner indicates good sign for Aus

b) Performance of past their best players, who play both formats esp. as specialists, can be judged based on one of the LOI formats too

c)  Many new players have broken into ODI set up through T20s

d) Hitting form, ability to play under pressure, etc., can be seen as well. Many would not say that a player who chokes in ODI would not choke in T20s

e) Etc

He is likely to do relatively well if his team is setting a target as the scoreboard pressure is relatively less :dontknow:

He isn't a good T20 player, said it before IPL. He is a solid #4 who will effortlessly rotate strike and motor along at 90-100 SR laying a platform for the lower middle order. Smith and Kane do the same thing for their ODI teams and both are so vital for their team's chances, can't use T20s to judge their ODI roles. Whatever Shankar has shown in the limited ODI opportunities I am happy with that. Twice he was run out when he was playing brilliantly, bad luck in a low sample size for him. It will be a blunder to drop him.

Also remember some players aren't motivated in IPL, some might play it safe (niggles, mental stress) because of the upcoming WC. Take these performances with a pinch of salt. Smith might struggle here, but come a WC SF or F he will make the opposite team have a sleepless night before the match. Do you think CA selectors will factor in IPL performances to decide their squad?

It depends upon at what stage the player is in his career .... an experienced player or someone whose position is secured can afford to play within himself if he desires (though top athletes try to give their best) .... new players or those competing for spots try to make the best use of every opportunity they get .... and in Ind, selections depends upon a variety of parameters .... also IPL, an Ind tourney, would be more relevant to Ind players

Maybe I am being biased here, but I don't take these IPL results that seriously, never have, never will. My worries about our squad have nothing to do with IPL, mostly team combo, extremely weak tail, wrong batting approach upfront (that ship has sailed), rubbish middle order, Chahal, Rayudu etc. I made up my mind about the squad 2 months back and 13 names are fixed (squad: 15 members I am guessing). Only doubtful about our second spinner and 4th quick. That's why I suggested the names of Ashwin and Ishant provided they are fit and releasing the ball well.

Dhawan, Rohit, Rahul...3 openers

Kohli

Pandya, Jadhav, Shankar...ARs

Dhoni, Pant...WK

Jaddu...12th man every match :p:

Shami, Bumrah, Bhuvi

1 spinner (want a finger spinner as defensive option, batting skills a big plus)?

1 quick who can be a wicket taking option with the new ball?

The entire possible squad (and coaches, selectors too if I may add:phehe:) doesn't inspire confidence, tone down your expectations and be content with a SF spot. Eng/Aus too strong atm and have most bases covered. Planning should start for 2023 home WC now.

I agree with many of your points. There are a few spots where nothing can be done. While some spots are still open. My points are more on how to salvage the situation (related to many of the concerns that you highlighted) and using the latest information available if required to cater a solution

Could be out if we lose the first 3 games vs SA, Aus and NZ, unless upsets by less fancied sides create various permutations and combinations

This is what I keep on saying.

The batsmen who come in to bat in the first 35 overs of ODIs have to focus more on innings building and less on slogging.

The pacers bowling in the first 40 overs of ODIs  have to focus more on bowling good length off stump balls and using variations and slower balls as primary weapons won't save them in the first 40 overs of ODIs.

Batsmen take less risks in ODIs ... so, bowlers have to be more incisive in their wicket taking ability.
