Nomenclature of Caribbean cricketers

A decade or so ago, the West Indian cricketers has regular names. The ones that were indistinguishable from the wider gamut of Anglo Saxon names. And those of Indian origin had Indian names or hybrid names.

But the cricketers today have really strange (first) names.

Alzarri Joseph

Keemo Paul

Shimron Hetmeyer

Carlos Braithewaite (Why a Latino first name, randomly  )

Keiron Pollard

I take it that these aren't usual names, even for the Caribbean.

Even many of the black people in the USA have strange first names. Probably a recent thing. Basically they add Le/De/Te before a regular name.

Leshaun

Deandre

Teshaun

Lashanda.

What gives?

@Mariyam you see that among North American African American populace names like Tamiqua, shonda, shaniqua etc etc. I think  it is a form of social rebellion. They want to embrace African sounding names and distance themselves from Christian names to move away from the memories  of slavery where they were given white sounding names. Obviously there is nothing ethnic African about these names, however it is their way of creating an identity.

There was a similar thing with the Nation of Islam as well when lot of them have embraced their own style of Islam prominent example being Malcom X and Md.Ali previously known as Cassius clay

West Indies had some Spanish influence also. The capital of Trinidad is Port of Spain. Brathwaite is from Barbados, which itself sounds like a Spanish name.
