Rumors suggest Virat Kohli’s vote of confidence got Dinesh Karthik into the team

The debate of picking the experienced Dinesh Karthik over the youth of Rishabh Pant as the backup wicketkeeper for the Indian 15-man squad for the ICC World Cup 2019 doesn’t seem to be getting cold any time sooner. It was also a nice little time away from RCB’s dismal IPL 2019 campaign for skipper Virat Kohli, as the meeting with BCCI higher up made him forget for a while that his team was at the last spot in the points table.

As Kohli’s RCB looks to face Dinesh Karthik’s KKR in their next match in the ongoing IPL 2019, the game, if rumors are to be believed, relates to the captains of the respective team and the World Cup squad. BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary on April 15, announced the 15-man squad and one of the major points apart from the no.4 spot batsman was who will be the backup keeper for MS Dhoni.

Virat Kohli bats for inclusion of experience of Karthik over expressiveness of Pant

Many experts had batted for Pant given his massive potential of turning matches on its head single-handedly. But Karthik won the race for the World Cup, as the selection committee deemed him the better keeper of the two. “Well, it’s definitely a case where we have debated at length and all of us, in unison, felt that either Rishabh Pant or DK will only come into the playing XI if Mahi (MS Dhoni) is injured,” MSK Prasad was quoted as saying by ibtimes.com.

“So, at that juncture, it is a crucial match like the semifinal or an important game (of the World Cup), wicketkeeping also matters. So that’s the only reason why we went ahead with Dinesh Karthik, otherwise, Rishabh Pant was almost there,” MSK Prasad added further.

As per rumors in IB Times, it was Kohli who swerved the decision of selectors with his vote of confidence going to Karthik given his newly found Zen-like calmness in finishing games. Pant, on the other hand, has shown a tendency of throwing away his wickets at the most inopportune time. It also suggested that four out of five selectors allegedly wanted Pant ahead of Karthik in the squad.

Another potential reason is that Kohli believes in a tactically astute wicketkeeper. We all have seen how dependent Kohli is on the inputs from MS Dhoni during the Indian team matches and his captaincy for RCB and for India in absence of Dhoni has found him looking for right advice from wise minds. Karthik has enough experience of leading Tamil Nadu and KKR and even took the franchise to the playoffs in his first season last year.

Therefore, Kohli preferred Karthik, given that he has played the game for long enough and can assess situations well.

He is not sure about his own captaincy and thus he need help from others. Even then he still loses games.

How can someone of his batting talent be so dumb in simple tactics and strategies? I wonder what's his educational background?

Studied only till 12th standard

Leadership got nothing to do with education

Kohli thinks his style - discipline etc when applied in leadership will work too . He scores mainly calculated shots which makes him highly successful as a batter .. but as a captain u ought to learn to mix aggression with caution

kohli goes by formula - a david dhawan style approach . He is not innovative in his captaincy just like his batting . Hence he is the most successful test batter and odi batter in middle overs but not much success given the kind of bowling he has - unparalleled in any captains history in india .

dhoni had some flair and used his resources to the fullest . Ganguly was tactically the best one - as he was also the least gifted - remember how he got under steve Waugh’s skin

Tendulkar was a good captain too - just had dodda Ganesh etc as his. Bowlers which caused him to not win much but I remember him being open to innovation and changes

kohli is afraid of failure - plays safe .

Rohit tried to take chances . Has flaws and inspite of that goes berserk - reflects in his captaincy

hence a pant as captain will be the best choice in future - he takes chances , can play conservative too and is not the most gifted keeper but seen enough of him to rate him as a potential great captain if supported by a good non bevda coach - read Dravid

Pant still has to improve his ODI game. He is a good hitter atm and make no mistake, he will be a big player in the future but right now, you cant count on him to play a long innings if a few wickets fall at the top quickly.

He is not a finisher. He loses shape while the need of the hour is slogging with field spread. He doesn't get into good positions. He just tries to muscle them. Infact finishing game is an art. Dhoni/Pandya/KKD are good at it. Only issue is KKD blows hot and cold.

Kohli has been a massive disappointment as a LOI skipper. He  is undoing all the hard works of Ganguly and Dhoni. If we fail to reach the semi finals this world cup...make Rohit Sharma the ODI skipper.

Stats wise, captain Kohli is far ahead of both Dhoni and Dada.

Dada’s legacy was a first round exit in 2004, 2006 CTs and 2007 WC. Dhoni’s legacy was a semi final in 2015 WC. We were not winning one trophy after another under them either. And both lost home ODI series to Pakistan.
