Quick Look analysis of India's Venues at the World Cup

Recommended Posts

      1.Old Trafford, Manchester

India play two matches here against Pakistan and West Indies. India's overall record at this ground is unimpressive. We have played 8 matches, won 3 and lost 5. However our record against Pak and Windies is good as we have met both these teams once each here and won both those matches. Those wins were crucial too, one being the league match win against WI in 1983 and the other being the 1999 WC win over Pakistan. This ground, unlike other venues, is not as high scoring. Batsmen have averaged 26.86 since 2015 which is less than the all time average at this ground. Scoring rates have been moderate at 5.24 runs per over. 300 has been breached only once in the 4 matches that have been played since 2015. Also teams bowling first have triumphed in 3 of these four matches.

      2. Edgbaston, Birmingham

India play England and Bangladesh at this venue. We have a good record at this ground having won 7 of the 10 matches we've played here. Our record against England here is also good (3-1 including the 2013 CT final). We have also won both our 2017 CT matches at this ground. Batsmen have had a great time since 2015 averaging 42.51 and going at 5.70 runs per over. Teams chasing have had a 4-1 advantage since 2015. India and England have both played here twice since 2015(never against each other though) and average 146.0 and 124.0 with the bat respectively which sets up a mouth watering clash.

      3. The Ageas Bowl, Southampton

India play South Africa and Afghanistan here. This is a relatively newer ground having hosted ODIs since 2003. India have only played 3 matches and lost twice to England and won once(against Kenya). This has been a batsmen's paradise since 2015 with batters averaging 56.2 and scoring at 6.36. Teams batting first have a 3-2 advantage. Expect huge totals here. India's top three have to fire. Adil Rashid has  a four wicket haul which seems to be the only decent bowling performance in quite a while. Chahal and Kuldeep should be sure shot starters given the opponent in South Africa. Lower order hitting from Pandya may turn out to be vital.

      4. Kennington Oval, London

India have an all important clash against Australia at this venue. The only previous encounter here with Australia was 1999 WC super six game which we lost, making this an opportunity for revenge. We have won 5 and lost 9 at this venue(CT 2017 final loss). Since 2015 batting averages have been higher as expected at 42.99. Chasing seems to be advisable here also with a 6-2 record since 2015. Jofra Archer got the ball to move around vs Pak in his first spell as did Amir in 2017. Early wickets might be key.

      5. Trent Bridge, Nottingham

India play New Zealand here in a vital match. India have won thrice and lost thrice in six matches at this venue. One of those losses unfortunately was against New Zealand in the 1999 Wc. On the positive side India have won their last two matches here and our spinners have taken a lot of wickets in those two matches. The boundary on one side of this ground is very short making six hitting quite easy. Teams have scored at a whopping 6.9 runs per over at this ground since 2015. Totals like 481 and 444 have been set batting first. India may want to bat first and set a humongous total but one can never be certain of this as India chose to bowl the last time and won. I would like to see KL Rahul in this match tonking some sixes. Rohit Sharma has to come into his own also. Spin is the way to go. Guptill Taylor etc will be major threats.

      6. Headingley, Leeds

India play Sri Lanka here in their last group stage match. India have a poor 3-6 win loss record(one of these a win against East Africa). The result here may be inconsequential as we probably will have qualified by then. The venue has been good for batting since 2015 with batters averaging 41.18. India should win this game given their recent run against Sri Lanka. However we must not mess it up as we did against Rashid the last time we played here.

Good analysis

Which stadiums should we expect good amounts of Indian fan support?

Manchester has more Pakistanis than Indians. London has a sizeable British Indian population so expect good support there. Birmingham also has twice as many British Indians as British Bangladeshis. Leeds and Nottingham will also have favorable crowds as we take on Sri Lanka and New Zealand there. Only matches where Indian crowds maybe outnumbered by their opponents are the ones vs Pakistan in Manchester and against England in Birmingham.

Guys living in UK can enlighten us further on this

Good analysis..In London,Kennington Oval tickets all sold..and thats a venue where there will be loads of Indians in the ground.so for Australia it will be a big challenge as end to end blue supporters.Even I had applied for this ticket but didnt get it..In UK you put your name in a draw for these events and if yiu are lucky you get the tickets..if not your money is refunded..

For Edgbaston again I think it will be Indians all the way. more than Bangladeshis...remember the CT 2013 Final..Nasser Hussain said India was playing at home..I have been to Edgbaston to see a test match and the ground is pretty small (I remember the match 2011 India  England, where Tendulkar got run out when Raina drove straight and the bowler touched it..then Dhoni and Praveen Kumar tonked a few and some of the balls were within 2-3 feet of our vicinity though I was in one of the top rows..)..I am only concerned about old trafford as India falters there a lot..
