I am choosing the world cup edition with the best world xi here.I feel never has a world cup had 3 teams which were so strong as South Africa,Australia and Pakistan in 1999 .All 3 compared with the greatest teams ever.Close behind would be 2003 world cup xi with the mercurial talent of a great Australian side combined with the strong Indian,Kiwi and Sri Lankan teams. At 3rd would be the 2011 with a very strong Indian Sri Lankan ,and South African team.I feel in the earlier editions of the cup the standard of ODI cricket from 1975-87 apart from the phenomenal supremacy of West Indies. From early nineties ODI cricket standard elevated.

My selections of world cup xi's in order of merit.
1.1999
2.2003
3.2011
4.2015
5.2007
6.1996
7.1992
8.1983
9.1987
10.1979
11.1975

1999 World cup XI
Saed Anwar
Sachin Tendulkar
Rahul Dravid
Inzamam Ul Haq
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist
Azhar Mehmood
Lance Kluesner
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Alan Donald

Perfect balance of batsmen, allrounders and bowlers.Blending of attacking batsmen like Inzamam ,Sachin and Anwar with batsmen who could do a repair job like Dravid and Waugh.Greatest bowlers in Wasim,Donald and Warne.

2003 World cup xi

Sachin Tendulkar
Virendra Sehwag
Ricky Ponting
Brian Lara
Andrew Symonds
Adam Gilchrist
Shaun Pollock
Shane Bond
Glen Mcgrath
Chamin De Vas
Murlitharan

Great bowling attack with Murli ,Chamin De Vaas Bond and Mcgrath and devastating batsmen with Tendulkar,Gilchrist,Lara,Ponting and Sehwag. Not as good all-rounders of 1999 edition.

Harsh - Off topic but can you tell me why world cup was not played on the year 2000? Normally it takes place every 4 years. After 96 why there was another world cup scheduled in 1999 and not 2000?

Because of the mismanagement of the 92 WC, which was supposed to happen in 91. It was 75,79,83,87, and then it was held 5 years later in 92. So to rectify the mistake they held it in 99, instead of 00. Plus, 96 was an olympic year, so they wanted to avoid competition with Olympics or so I heard.

I would try to find a way to add Brett Lee to the 2003 edition.
