He has the game to hook/pull 90 MPH bowlers. Is good on the drive and also plays the ramp and scoop shots. What more can you ask for from a middle order bat??

 

His temperament is qustionable at times, but as we saw in Tests he learns quickly. You cannot judge a guy when he comes in with RRR at 9 from the get-go. I'm so happy he got a hit and will probably settle in once the KOs come around. Imagine Shankar walking in when Rishabh did and ask yourself if you feel comfortable?

Only Indian keeper with a Test 100 in Eng and Aus. Give him his keeping gloves in LOIs and he will flourish like he did in Tests. Any young keeper batsman will struggle if asked to play as a specialist batsman.

On one hand Dhoni has a cushion, when he sucks at batting which is 9 times out of 10, people talk about his keeping skills, when he sucks at that too, then they say how he is guiding the spinners.

 

On the other hand we have a proper keeper that is an X factor bat and already the 2nd best test keeper bat India has produced behind Saha and we are nitpicking when he is put in such situations where he is playing and judged  as a pure bat and on top of that sent above other “experienced” and “specialist bats” to ensure runrate of 8 rpo is kept in check

 

we are a weird team, on one hand we whine about one dimensional players and clamor for 3d players but when we actually get a genuine allrounder we convert him into a one dimensional one

Surya Kumar is lower quality than Kedar Jadhav. Atleast Jadhav has earned his stripes by being a top notch player in domestics. SKY is a bonafide mediocre hack good enough for IPL.

 

Kishan not a 100% sold on him. I used to rate him over Pant but Pant has leap frogged him by miles.

Looked nervous and fat. Some of his leg side shots were ugly to see. But he did perform better than Dhongi and showed more game awareness. That's a plus.

We all know he loses shape with some shots, has brainfarts but he has the pedigree to be international class and attacking. A rare breed, he almost had 4 tons in his first few tests batting low down the order. Home and away.  Back him fully as the future keeper batsman. His place should not be questioned this entire wc unless you want people like Shankar to come in who can't bat, can't bowl and just field. We should only be thinking which is his ideal position. I still say open.

He should only walk in last 10 overs of game. Anything early, and it’s receipy for disaster. His game is not made for numbet 4. 

Both Jadhav and MSD would have done better job.

i think the best slot for Pant in ODI is opening. He can be like 'Jayasoorya for shorter periods' .His ODI temperament is best suited for that.I mean while he is at the crease, atleast 'run a ball' is guaranteed  .Field restrictions in the first 10 overs would help his method even more. Being a left hander brings  in variety at the top too.

Bhai, i can imagine , a brand new ball, good length will nip in or out, touch his gloves, or take the edge for caught behind.

 

In best case he will be caught at point with ball coming quicker then expected or his hoick will go to midwicket instead of square leg boundry.

spot on... that is why  'field restrictions' & there by opening slot is the best position for him. He is not a slogger but a genuine batsman with all the shots. Its not hackish....he plays a high risk game so its difficult to be consistent. Sehwag was also not consistent in ODI's

yes, he can play a very similar role as gilly. open in ODIs (albeit with strict instructions not to slog too much) and bat at 6 in tests.

Kusal's str:  of 92 is actually adequate of an ODI opener. It is his avg: of 32 that is not that adequate.  But the differences here is that  in Pan't case , we have proper high qlty batsmen to follow  who can make use of the starts Pant can provide while SL  is not that good in that regard. More over, apart from that SAF performance  off late, Kusal's test  credentials are not adequate of a proper batsman while Pant avg:s close to 50 with 2 100s in SENA . That means Pant in general has got a higher ceiling when compared to Kusal.

Pant too has age on his side , so it is worth a try  taking enough time & patience.
