Their only hope of somehow pulling off a miracle win is to win it with the ball. Makes sense to give the bowlers first crack on a fresh track with bounce and a bit of green. You start a game with your strength and not your weakness. Bowling first was their only move here. They could only bat first if the track was on the flatter side.
