The big 3 future hopes

Recommended Posts

Shubman Gill  -> We are probably looking at the most stylish player after Rohit Sharma, the most talented player after Kohli and a run machine like Steven Smith.. Gill averages a mammoth 78 after 13 F.C matches.  Such is his talent that this guy can actually walk-in to all the test teams across the world but ours..

One of those rare players who can really perform in all three formats.

Navdeep Saini -> I don't think we have ever had a 145+ matured pacer , who can bowl both inswing & outswing, bounce out top class batsman with the ball hitting high on the blade  i.e, bouncer caught at fine leg and not some lucky catch at deep square leg just behind boundary ) and someone who has played sufficient first class matches to bowl the test match lengths and spells ( second/third / fourth spells )

Currently suitable for tests.

Rahul Chahar ->  Forget Kuldeep, this guy is potentially the real triumph card for overseas tests. Has a beautiful action, a strong leg break and a googly.. our version of Yasir Shah.. and is an extremely capable batsman at 8/9. It is said that Leg spinners get better with age and right time is around 26.. he is still officially 20 but in couple of years, he should be our real weapon for spin.  He should gain a little more strength in his shoulders and flight the ball a little more. Only problem is too much of T20 cricket might spoil him.

Can play all the three formats but should be careful not to let the gains of one format impact the other.

Saini is not a 145+ bowler. He will bowl around 136-137 in Tests and 145+ mostly in T20s and occasionally in ODIs. Plus he is already 27, so may not play for more than 4-5 years.

As for Mavi and Nagerkotti, given their fitness issues, once fully fit they'd need to play for at least another 18-24 months before getting anywhere closer to the national side.

I'd say if handled well, Siraj, though a notch slower than Saini, has a much brighter future. Is a proper longer format bowler and has the numbers and performances at the A level to prove it.

Also add Avesh in the mix, needs slight work on his run up and delivery stride and he's potentially an asset in the longer formats.

Likewise, keep backing Khaleel for the LOIs. Has done decently in the chances he's got and can improve further. Has age on the side to work on his fitness and keep sgetting stronger adding to his pace.

The biggest reason why Siraj has not been able to come in the mix is because he starts bowling very inaccurately a bit too frequently.  He starts spraying the ball every 3rd innings.

And yet he has the best bowling numbers among all the bowlers. not to forget the 60+ wickets in 7-8 A unofficial tests, something no Indian pacer (or even spinner) has ever done.

Big difference between A-team games and Senior team games.

Players like Shardul and M.Pandey have been regular performers for a long time for A-teams but have looked under par while playing for the Seniors.

Nevertheless ... Siraj deserves to get to play a few test matches.  Should have debuted against the WI at home last year.

I was just outlining why he has not been in the Senior Team so far, despite stellar wicket taking stats.

A lot of decisions are made by the Team management when chosen players practice in the nets ... and they must come across as international class.

Next time when you question selection / omission of certain players, do consider this same line of argument.

does a 145+ bowler bowl 145+ all the time ( there has been no such bowler ever).

Saini has never played test so unless you are a time traveler and can prove it, what ever you say is just a fart.

Fast-bowlers do not retire at 32 as a norm.

Gill and Shaw playing in all formats for India.  Kohli leading the batting. Pant maturing. Pandya and Iyer smashing in LOIs. Pujara lending solidity in tests.

Bumrah, Saini, Mavi, Nagarkoti, Avesh making up most of the pacer pool after Ishant and Shami are done.

Kuldeep and Rahul Chahar taking care of the wrist spin department. Jadeja continuing his improvement.

Would be nice if it happens in the near future.
