This is my list in order of merit of the most lethal or best bowling pair opening the attack in the history of West Indies cricket.

1.Andy Roberts-Michael Holding

2.Malcolm Marshall-Michael Holding

3.Malcolm Marshal-Joel Garner

4.Curtly Ambrose-Courtney Walsh

5.Malcolm Marshall-Curtly Ambrose

6.Wes Hall-Charlie Griffiths

7.Courtney Walsh-Patrick Paterson

1.Roberts-Holding at top spot because of perfect blending of perfect action and speed through the air of Holding with the craft and variation of Roberts.Responsible for creating the crucial turning point in West Indies  emerging  the champion cricketing power in 1976 in England and in Australia in 1979-80.

2.The combination of the hostility and magical variations of Marshall with the fluidity and speed of Holding was deadly combination. This was Holding who bowled marginally less quick but mastered use of the seam in swing the ball in and out with Marshal at his peak skidding a cricket ball and being more deceptive than any pace bowler in the game. They showed their prowess in India in 1983-84 capturing 33 and 30 wicket respectively.

3.All the attributes of Marshall blended with the phenomenal accuracy and ability to make a ball lift from a disconcerting height by Garner  would make it one of cricket's greatest fusions.

4.The phenomenal accuracy, hostility and lethal bounce of Ambrose was  the perfect foil for the grace and subtle variations of Walsh who was simply a workhorse and a metronome of fast bowling.

5.Marshall was not at his best when he bowled in tandem with Ambrose from 1988-89 ,nor was Ambrose.Otherwise may have been the greatest pair ever.

Pre- Helmet era fast bowlers had an undue advantage  of scaring batsmen and hence they got a better rating as fearsome .

I do not think Shoib, Lee , Marshal were any less dangerous at their peak compared to pre -Helmet era fast bowlers.
