Dhoni is not given a central contract

MS Dhoni is no longer a centrally contracted player with the BCCI. His name didn't feature in the 27 contracts handed out by the Indian board on Thursday. He last played for India during the World Cup in 2019 post which there has been a suspense around his future. He had been awarded a Grade A contract, which brings a retainer of INR 5 crore, in 2019. Top-order batsman KL Rahul made the jump from Grade B to A, an incentive of INR 2 crore.

While Dhoni has not played any professional cricket since the World Cup, India coach Ravi Shastri has said more than once that Dhoni could throw his name in the ring for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year if he does well in the IPL. Others to lose contracts were Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik and Khaleel Ahmed.

BCCI's central contracts list for 2019-2020

Grade A+ (INR 7 cr): Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah

Grade A (INR 5 cr): R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul

Grade B (INR 3 cr): Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya, Wriddhiman Saha, Mayank Agarwal

Grade C (INR 1 cr): Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, Hanuma Vihari,, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar

Otherwise, there weren't many massive changes from the contracts list from last year. Test opener Mayank Agarwal, who made his debut in Melbourne in a delicately poised series and immediately impressed, was the big gainer, entering the list at Grade B, which comes with a retainer of INR 3 crore. Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who had dropped to Grade C thanks to injuries, came back to join Agarwal in Grade B.

Other new names in the contracts - as of now - included limited-overs specialists: Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar. They all entered the system at Grade C, which comes with a retainer of INR 1 crore.

The A+ grade, which includes players who feature in all three formats, remained unchanged with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah retaining their INR 7 crore fee. The injured Hardik Pandya, who has played only T20Is since the World Cup, retained his Grade B contract.

These contracts are for October 2019 to September 2020. The total number of retainers has come down from 29 to 27. The recommendations for these contracts are made by national selectors based on a combination of performance in the previous year and the roles players are expected to play in the contract period. If someone out of this list gets an India cap during the period, he automatically gets a retainer.

The end is nigh. Where are the conspiracy theorists talking about how everything is a ploy to bring Dhoni back??

Dhoni is done and rightly so. Maybe two years too late but better late than never.

Its clear the captain and management wants him in the team while Ganguly, etc does not

Devoid of a 'central contract' if Dhoni were to be selected now, does it imply that he gets to represent India pro bono?

Can't think of a bigger act of patriotism. :isalute:

:phehe:  They dont get a retainer but I think they are paid per match, not that Dhoni needs the money

The IPL is probably his best bet to get back in.

I feel the same level of frustration seeing Saini and Thakur in the same bracket. Saini should be a grade higher.

If Mumbai wants to lobby some of their players, why the fck can't they do it for someone like a Shaw rather than BS like Thakur? Oh right, Brat doesn't want him.

Contracts are for mere mortals, not Lord Thala :adore: if the Lord wishes to grace the T20 WC after accepting our offering of trundlers like unadcut, Kaul in IPL, who are we to stop him

which category would this retainer be for? e.g. If he gets a T20 WC cap

Clearly the contract is a signal otherwise BCCI would have no issue extending it for 1 more year. Dropping a player and then selecting him on retainer seems very unlikely. Retainers are for young players who get selected for the first time, in between a year

Dhoni is above central contracts. That’s a sad fact.

Third eye says he will still play atleast 1 farewell match atleast T20.

His last odi game in India was in Ranchi so I am assuming he will play 1 last t20 match either in Ranchi or Chennai. Also with the TM + Captain there is an outside chance he will sneak in WT20 as well.

If I were in BCCI, I would definitely advertise a farewell match for Dhoni. Not because I think it is fair but it will make a lot of money especially in a place like Chennai were Rajnikant movie tickets are sold and bought for a lakh of rupees in black on first day. It would be a money spinner.

We have some idiots out there who keep cheering/chanting  Dhoni Dhoni or Mahi Mahi or we want sixer while Thala is lunging away to his hearts content.

Why is this even a news, how can anyone give a central contract to player who has not played for nearly six months. If they had given him a central contract then something drastically had to be changed in Indian cricket.

Dhoni has not announced his retirement that is his personal choice, Indian cricket has moved on and should move on, Shastri is a moron if he thinks Dhoni can comeback into Indian team based on his IPL performance.

All players then should  quit domestic cricket and play only IPL .

As opposed to the North which appreciates sophisticated cinematic masterpieces like Tiger Zinda Hai and Dabbang 3. :giggle:

As long as Jadeja & Ishant Sharma are there don't count Dhoni out.

Sharma would willingly throw himself off a tall building for his former captain freeing up his slot as well as letting Dhoni pick up his life insurance pay-out.

Classic Dhoniconda.

Ishant Sharma and Ravi Jadeja with Grade A contracts, these two guys seemingly are far too under-rated.

Freaking Jadeja averages 36 & 24 with bat & ball respectively in test matches, this is damn good, ODI ER of below 5 in this day and age is bloody brilliant.

And Jadeja is averaging 50 with the bat from 23 test matches in the last 3 years.
