KL Rahul as a keeper feels right, not looking to change it - Virat Kohli

They are holding one spot for Pandya, Rahul gives them the balance.

Dravid played over 300 plus Odis by becoming a keeper. Rahul should follow footsteps of his state’s legendary player.

Dravid played 70 of his 350 ODIs as a keeper, had already played 150 ODIs before helping the team by becoming a makeshift keeper.

But then you have to do PR to defend Kohli’s ****

Rahul should bat at No.5 or 6 position and also keep wickets.  Assuming dhawan returns to the odi squad soon.  Pant's batting looks unreliable. Afridi type. LOL. Has got too many chances. But hardly has batted according to situation.   Needs the boot.

WTF! Pant has just started bto flourish in ODIs. Check last WI series. He has barely played 16 ODIs.

He failed in the final odi against Windies.although platform was already set by the openers. His defensive skill looks suspicious.    Had it not been for shardul's slogging. We would hv lost that final game .

People forget that Pant is not only a new player but also a youngster .... that 16 ODIs are also played intermittently  .... Many are probably angry that he replaced Dhoni (though no fault of Pant here)

If rahul keeps wickets. We can play an extra bowler.  Rahul's wicket keeping was good in the last 2 games. Regarding Pant,  I used to like him when he initially started playing. But like me, most fans hv lost hope on him. For obvious reasons.    And no. We are not dhoni bhakts either.  Most of us here are aware that dhoni is finished.

Rahul can't keep and open. By the 45th over he was just standing and keeping plus looked a tired opener. Yes let destroy both pant and rahul together.

This.

In the end we will have destroyed two players.

I think there is a time and a place to use KL as a keeper to have an extra batsmen or bowler. Over the long run, its not the right solution.

Team balance is the key here. India's middle order is still susceptible.

Those are a lot of assumptions as :fear1:

a) KL prefers you open and may not want to keep regularly. And if/when he has a bad game, we know how it will play out (knives out on KL)

b) Pant can play as a batsman too. And you can’t lose hope on a talented youngster who has only played 16 ODIs intermittently. For reference, KL has been around since 2014

Pant seems to unreliable as a finisher...we need somebody who can take us home in the last 10-15 overs if Kohli gets out by 30th over. Pant seems to think that if he scores quickfire 25 to 30 runs then he has done his job. Batting at 5-6 is quite tricky and you need somebody who is really mentally strong who doesn't succumb to the pressure. So we should continue to give him a few more chances to see if he can absorb the pressure and develops finishing skills.

Every player whom Kohli has praised in recent times has seen a dip in form immediately afterwards. DK, Rahane, Rayudu, Shankar, Deepak Chahar are some of those who have suffered the Kohli curse.

I hope Rahul and Iyer turn out to be the exceptions.

On Rahul as a WK, at best this is a stop gap arrangement. Once he becomes a full time keeper-batsman, expectation will be higher and so will be the scrutiny in the media.

It's true that Kohli, the manlet, is a loose canon and not someone whose words are to be taken seriously. But. Imagine the pressure, entirely unnecessary, he has put on Pant if he plays in ODIs knowing he's still auditioning. And just when he was beginning to find his rhythm and tempo in this format.

If Kohli is clear and is being sincere in his thinking Pant has no role in LOIs, he should drop Pant from the squad (both Test and LOis) and let him play Ranji Trophy, A tours, county cricket and IPL.  Being in an environment where the captain and coach clearly do not want him will do more damage to him psychologically. He is still only 22, can be away from the national team till the time Kohli-Shastri are in charge and come back after the 2023 WC under a new captain and coach, he will still be only 25 by then and have a 10 year career ahead of him.

I had written a few months back when Pant was being abused publically by Kohli and Shastri that Pant should himself announce that for the next couple of years he wants to focus on domestic cricket to improve his cricket and will comeback to int'l cricket only when he feels he's improved enough. Pant being away from the team for a couuple of yearswill be a win-win for everyone - TM, experts and the Kohli-Dhoni PR mafia (which includes the commentators).
