KL Rahul as a keeper feels right, not looking to change it - Virat Kohli

List A average: 29.4

Guess his strengths don't really help him there.

Power hitting neans nothing without game sense. Just ask Afridi.

A keeper batsman with an avg of 30 and SR of 105 is any day better than those with a batting average of 35 and a SR of 80-85 especially when you are talking about positions 5/6/7.

Best way to judge stats in shorter formats - Average + SR . Either of those number on their own do not make much sense.

Thinking about this statement from Kohli, this is such a strategically thought out move. Playing Rahul as a keeper and middle order batsman, Kohli gets to neutralize two threats

1. Threat to his buddy Dhawan's place in the team as an opener (despite him being nearly 35)

2. Takes out Pant from the scene

Rahul as a part time keeper will also be prone to mistakes. It's those missed chances that will give Kohli the chance to immediately push for Dhoni to be included in T20 WC squad.

WTF! Pant has just started bto flourish in ODIs. Check last WI series. He has barely played 16 ODIs.

This TM does not bahave like other teams' .  Alex  Carry on both the matches got out with bad shots & in a way gifted the match, yet Aussies will not drop him. Infact is THE keeper for short formats for them. When the same happens with Pant ..... .       ????  Another case is Hetmeyer.  How many times he threw away his wicket . Yet WI includes him in matches. They just drop him for a match or 2 but he is alwys persisted.

See, we must understand that Kohli is THE man in Indian cricket, probably till 2023 WC. In interest of ending this constant circus around Pant which has been carrying on for the last 1 year, I am glad that a suitable replacement has been found...KL is decent as a keeper and can do the job in LOIs.

Pant has issues - with batting temperament, in particular with compulsively playing leg-side paddles/heaves - the line which bothers him is the middle-leg stump line when he hits off balance, not outside off where he has all the shots in the book like cut, drive. But - and this is a big BUT - he is just 22, has only played a handful of games under CONSTANT SCRUTINY...hell, Yuvraj (spin), Raina (short ball), Dravid (inability to rotate strike) all had issues which they struggled with in beginning or throughout their career, but they were ultimately successful over length of their career.  Pant too would have found his feet in due course of time, but with KL getting the skipper's nod, now he should be dropped and allowed to return to domestics & try for a county stint.

Honestly, we have so much of talent in the system compared to other teams right now, that a captain just has to make a decision and back his players - chances are, we would end up winning most silverware. We might even have won that SF against NZ if Kohli had played Rayudu and Jadhav like he had been planning for the last 1 year!

So if KL feels right to Kohli as a LOI keeper, stick with it! Also, give KL a fixed spot at no. 5, since you are sold on Dhawan as opener - get Shaw as reserve opener. Even in the final ODI, KL didn't look impressive opening....he was brilliant at No. 5 in the 2nd ODI - just having only one gear to bat at seems to clear his mind.

And stick to Iyer too - don't just lose interest like a child does when he sees a new toy. In T20s, open with KL and bring in SKY at No. 5 in place of Pant.

Oh, one final thing - if the ulterior motive with this KL/Pant/Samson debate is to bring Dhoni back for T20 WC as some of us suspect, then its fair to say that Kohli-Shastri combine do not have best interests of Indian cricket at heart and the sooner their toxic regime ends, the better.

Does KL want to be a full time keeper?

As someone else pointed out NZ will be difficult for any keeper, is he up to the job?

TBF to the team, Pant has shown glimpses, but been too inconsistent, hasn't properly grabbed the opportunities provided to him. And having an additional spot would allow to strengthen the team in any conditions

As long as KL is ok with it , it shuld be fine & I think he does not mind keeping , else he would not be voluntarily doing it for Karnataka  ..I was actually surprised they sent him opening yesterday though . He cannot open after keeping for 50 overs , will be injured soon . Anyway knowing Virat , nothing is permanent , so we will talk may be after 6 months if KL is still in the team .

Vasu is wrong...that ball glanced off Smith's bat, was technically a chance though very difficult even for regular WK so no blame to Rahul. Umpire gave it as a leg bye, but the ball clearly came off the bat.

You missed the point. Dhoni or Bhoni, he is irrelevant in-front of a local player.

I don't know whether Kohli and Sastry have best interest of Indian cricket or not but it's likely that they have interest of few and themselves ahead of Indian cricket. Otherwise no way Dhawan continues to get selected in T20 when you have KL and Rohit doing well there and Shaw , Gill waiting in the wings. No way Shardul Thakur gets continuous chances(even after few injury fiascos) ahead of consistent performers in domestic cricket, notwithstanding the fact that he can hit a few. No way Pant, the keeper gets misused when in LOI he does not have an immediate competition - Samson and Kishan does not look to be a lot better to be honest. And as far as Dhoni is concerned, it is a call from the sponsors as Dhoni still generates a lot of money, and in that case Kohli will go to any extent to make that happen.

Kohli’s future press conference: “we always believed in the potential of Pant. We back youngsters and fast track them to the national team. It is difficult to leave a player like Pant out of the 11.”  :dontknow:

Yup he has said the same about KL twice

1st time - dropped after 3 games

2nd time - dropped after one game

Dravid played 70 of his 350 ODIs as a keeper, had already played 150 ODIs before helping the team by becoming a makeshift keeper.

But then you have to do PR to defend Kohli’s ****

If Dravid didn't keep for those 70 odis, his odi career would have been finished in 2003.Similar Rahul if he starts keeping now and becomes a core member by performing with bat, another keeper Pant or anyone else can always take over later the keeping duties. At the present time Rahul the keeper gives India the balance it needs while allowing Rahul to play every match.

You don't become core member by being out of the team.

Stop being a moron, Kohli is not my friend or relative.

Carey should not be dropped coz he has cemented his place in odi with a consistent average of 40.  On the other hand, pant has not yet been able to cement his place. Coz he averages only 27.  Both of them bat at similar position but see the difference in class.
