Recommended Posts

An exercise to select the AT World ODI 11 for the year 2020 .... Min qualification: 2,000 runs or 100 wickets vs. major teams

The Core

  • Batsman: Viv Richards, who is rated as the best ODI batsman of AT. Delivers under pressure - has 100s in a WC final for e.g. .... Will bat at either 3 or 4
  • Bowler: Garner, who is rated among the best ODI bowlers of AT. Delivers under pressure - has a 5-er in a WC final for e.g.

With the core out of the way, let's fill the other slots:

Openers

  • Classic picks: Sachin, Jayasuriya and Greenidge
  • Other viable options: Hayden and Gilly (esp. if picked as a WK)
  • Current stand out option: Bairstow (esp. if picked as a WK. Avg of 48 more importantly w/ a SR of 108 as of today)

3-5

  • One of the slots is occupied by Viv
  • Options: Kohli, ABDV, Bevan, Dhoni (esp. if in as a WK), Ponting, Hussey, ....

6-7 (ideally big hitters, finishers, pressure players, ARs, ....)

  • Contenders: Buttler (a SR of 119) esp. if playing as a WK, Hussey, Stokes, Klusener, ....

Bowlers

  • One slot is occupied by Garner
  • Contenders (do not need to play a specialist spinner for the sake of playing one esp. when selecting from AT level players): Starc, McGrath, Lee, Lillee, Warne, Bond, Hadlee, Wasim, Holding, Donald, ....

The  World AT ODI 11 for the year 2020

* Sachin (solid vs. most types of bowling)

* Jayasuriya (spin bowling AR. a high SR batsman esp. in power plays. a big match winner on his day)

* Viv Richards (good under pressure)

* ABDV (the 360 degrees batting brings an unique value to the team. can keep too if required)

* Bevan (good under pressure and as a finisher when either batting first or second. can partner well with strokemakers such as ABDV and Buttler)

* Buttler (WK. SR of 119)

* Stokes (AR, good under pressure)

* Hadlee (one of the great bowling ARs. a master of accuracy and swing to bring that quality/edge to the team, along w/ batting depth at #8)

* Warne (a specialist spinner is not a necessity in an AT setup but if someone like Warne is available, ....)

* Starc (bowling SR of 27; can run through teams on his day; a good to have left-arm pace option even though "left arm" is not a big criteria for selection)

* Garner (the big bird)

Notes

  • 5-6th bowlers: Stokes + Jayasuriya + Richards, along w/ Sachin and Bevan if required

For a tri-series like scenario

3rd 11 (w/ some relatively underrated players)

* Greenidge (highly consistent w/ 50+ scores. can be a big hitter too. test level opener. brings the Caribbean flavor)

* Roy (SR 107)

* S Smith (Avg of 53 at #3. can bowl too)

* M Crowe (avg of 45+ in MO. captaincy + big tournament performance)

* Taylor (effective)

* Dhoni (WK, cool head, finisher, hitter)

* Kapil (AR)

* Pollock (AR)

* Saqlain (doosra)

* Donald (pace)

* McGrath (control)

None of your 3 teams could find a spot for Sehwag , Gilly, Rohit or  Shakib ?

Dude is totally biased towards few players imo.

Makes Jayasurya look as if he is ATG batsman in odi cricket and posts similar stats against other players showing how bad they are.

Gilly who scored 3 fifty plus scores in worldcup final can't find place even in one out of 3 all time odi xis.

1999 WC Final - 54 of 36 balls (150 strike rate)

2003 WC Final - 57 of 48 balls (118 strike rate)

2007 WC Final - 149 of 104 balls (143 strike rate)

Tell me someone more clutch than this as WK batsman.

Nah

Sehwag, one of my favourite batsmen, lost out to Roy, who has a better avg but similar strike rate .... Since par scores are high now, avg of current batsmen could be higher than those in the past when par scores were relatively lower so difference in avgs to a certain degree is not everything when accounting for periods so Sehwag too can be considered

Gilly, who would be in my AT Test 11, lost out to Jayasuriya, who at his peak gave surreal performances in the 90s and as the spin bowling AR to bowl a few overs with Stokes, the other AR in the first 11. While Gilly can be MoM, Jayasuriya can be MoS ('96 WC for e.g.).  At #6-7, Buttler with a SR of 119-120 comes in as the WK, that also allows for the Buttler-Stokes combination which works nicely .... In the 2nd 11, Bairstow edges out Gilly for both higher avg and SR .... In the 3rd 11, Dhoni comes in as the WK batsman to add his "calmness" to the middle order

Players have to compliment each other and play certain roles too. Other players that I could not squeeze in include D Jones, etc. May have to do a 4th 11

An 11 purely based on stats (unadjusted for period so you may see more current players featuring as the par scores have gone up)

  • For batsmen, higher AVSR
  • For bowlers, lower AVSR
  • Min 2,000 runs or 100 wkts

Player (AVSR)

Bairstow (5232 in TO)

Rohit (5116 in TO)

Richards (5079 in TO)

Kohli (5727 in TO)

ABDV (5752 in MO)

Buttler (4836 in MO)

Stokes (4446 in MO)

Lee (693)

Bond (676)

Starc (647)

Ajmal (737)

Notable among the "classic" players

Viv 5079 (when adjusted for par scores this could be the best among batsmen)

Garner 698 (just missed out as one slot was kept for a specialist spinner)

Lillee 705 (just missed out)
