From TOI - APRIL 18 HAS BEEN AN EVENTFUL DAY IN CRICKETING HISTORY Indian Premier League (IPL), cricket’s biggest revolution since Kerry Packer, is set to unfold from April 18. 1994 Brian Lara broke Gary Sobers’ long-standing Test record of 365 Test runs in an innings when he hit England’s Chris Lewis for four at Antigua. The record was significant on two counts: Sobers himself was present on the ground and he hugged Lara when the record was broken; and two, it took 36 years to break this record, the longest gap in this category (most runs in a Test innings, progressive record). 1992 When Allan Donald bowled to Desmond Haynes; 10 South African (sans Kepler Wessels) made their Test debuts as Proteas played their first Test after re-admission against West Indies at Barbados. West Indies won the Test by 52 runs as SA were bundled out for 148, chasing 201. Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh took six and four wickets respectively. 1986 The Javed Miandad six off Chetan Sharma full-toss on the last ball gave Pakistan the Australasia Cup in Sharjah and broke India’s heart. That shot and that result had deep scars on Indian psyche. So much so that it took India 12 years to win a final against Pakistan (1998, Independence Cup in Dhaka; last over four by Hrishikesh Kanitkar off Saqlain Mushtaq). After Miandad heroics, there was a phase in Sharjah where India lost 11 of 12 ODIs against Pakistan. Eighteen years later (2004), on the very 18 (April), India returned home from Pakistan after registering first-ever wins there in both formats of the game. 1958 Malcolm Marshall was born. The West Indian paceman was not just the most feared bowler of his era. A whiplash action sans the big leap, Marshall flummoxed batsmen in strategy. His guile fetched him 376 Test wickets at an average of 20.94, the lowest among bowlers with 200-plus wickets and his combined tally of average, strike rate and economy rate (70.32) is the best among bowlers with 375-plus wickets.
