The biggest flops at the IPL

Which have been the biggest flops at the IPL so far? Here's my two cents. 1) Sachin Tendulkar — Raised everyone's expectations of him and now he's warming the bench. Not his fault, but still disappointing to not see him play. 2) The Spirit of Cricket — What nonsense! Look what Bhajji did. And his hugging Sreesanth for the cameras reminds me of the uneasy truce between Chappell and Ganguly. That relationship was destined to fail after the fall out. 3) The Deccan Chargers (until Sunday night) — Explosive team that looked utterly listless. 4) Sony's coverage — What utter nonsense. The ads are intrusive and irritating. The presenters keep fumbling their lines. The interviewers need to brush up their cricket knowledge. Feel free to disagree. What do you guys think?

dravid & ganguly. over $ 1000000 wasted with no result
Good point. Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid — they were all priced at over a million dollars each. That's a total of 30,000,000 dollars for these icon players.

My thoughts on Sony's coverage. Cross posting from my blog. Sony's coverage of the tournament has had us cringing, when not frowning upon their intrusive advertisements. The anchors keep fluffing their lines, often looking stiff and nervous. One of their interviewers once excitedly asked Anil Kapoor about his where his loyalties lay --- when the actor was dressed in a jersey that screamed 'Mumbai Indians'. The commentary is unimaginative. Ravi Shastri can't think beyond "Tracer bullet" and "clean as a whistle" to describe a big hit. If we're lucky, he treats us to both clichés in the same sentence. His partner L. Sivaramkrishnan often sounds like he's on the verge of a cardiac arrest. The idea of wiring players flops too, with poor audibility posing problems. Besides, each six is a "DLF Maximum Sixes Candidate", each good bit of play is a "Citi Moment of Success". No, it's not the commercialisation that is crass. It's the constant repetition of these phrases, which assaults the viewer's senses and kills all respectability in the commentary. Also mention-worthy is the regular scoping of cameras up the skirts of cheerleaders. It is not only ill-mannered, it is unfit for family viewing.

If you had done accounting for IPL, IPL itself would have been a flop :hysterical:

Actually, VVS decision to give up 'Icon' status seems a master stroke. He probably knew he is the captain and in the team more for symbolic reasons than anything else. He also probably anticipated that, in this form of the game, where ultra-hard hitters and power-players prosper the most, there is a good chance will look a bit lost on the field. So, he very smartly gave up the million dollars and chose a more respectable route. Guys like Dravid and Ganguly however, took the bait, along with the money of course and now, when their teams arent doing well and big part of that is because of their presence in the team, that has given lots of people to poke fun at 'em for their million dollar price tag. At the twilight of their careers, this isnt the ideal way to bow out or hamper your legacy. Who knows, both Ganguly and Dravid may stil fire in the remainder of the tournament and redeem themselves, but that looks unlikely at this moment. For Dravid especially, the last one year has been horrendous, first with him quitting from captaincy, then dropped from the ODI team, his test form dipping drastically, and now, his embarrassing performances so far in IPL.

I agree with you on Sony's coverage. The way the godrej and the vodafone ads keep popping up really test my patience. And that stupid vodafone ad with the little girl and its pet dog causes immense hatred and deep intolerance (to put it mildly). But I only have to find another link for the world to be fine again. CBN is pure bliss. No ads, just cricket: Nirvana!

Here's a bit from today's Indian Express, on the inconisation of players.

for the BCCI the concern should be the iconisation of its cricketers. The IPL is founded on the star qualities of Indian cricketers. Barring a high bid for, ironically, Symonds, India’s leading cricketers are the highest paid members of the eight squads. It was obviously felt that an Indian icon was required by the squads for a sense of city loyalty to coalesce around each of them. Without the stars, it could be said, the IPL as a summertime entertainer would not be possible. Harbhajan’s outrageous — though unsurprising — behaviour shows the dangers of nurturing the star system. In a strange way, the episode makes the BCCI’s point to critics of the IPL: the league is, ultimately, about cricket and its codes.

u foolz... just about 15 games have been played. total of 59 games left.. means about 44 games left.. no one flopped, no one hit.. all will be decided later.. Dravid and Laxman and gangles all have good enough chance to earn more respect
Cricketics ... nobody here said that the entire tournament has flopped, so mind the F-word please. Of course, things could change and should change here. But for a tournament as high profile as this, there have been some baffling failures which this thread intends to discuss. You may get down from the fence now.

Since only 25% of the games are yet played, I will give players more time to show up their skills. But as far as Sony's coverage goes, it is absolutely horrible. They don't even wait for commentator to finish of the line after an over before popping up an advertisement. And what is it with ads having music showing up while over is in progress . Totally faltu coverage.

What is sad about the coverage is that there is no way to protest — except to switch the channel. But again, it's hard to do that because you want to watch the game. Hence, you have no options but to suffer through the coverage. And what do you say about SET Max? They've put in millions and millions to get the rights to the IPL. They want to earn that money back and they would cram their programming with ads. Maybe we should write to them in huge numbers — start an online petition or something — saying that we will stop watching if they continue with their irritating display of ads. Protests, anyone?
