Wisdom tooth surgery/ extraction?

Have any of you done it? How was the experience? In the US, even though wisdom tooth does not cause a problem currently, they always suggest to do a surgery to remove it since it can cause problem "later on in life" and they suggest it is better to deal with it when you dont have any problem (rather than go when you have a problem or pain to deal with) http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/wisdom-tooth-extraction Well, not pleasant! to go and have a voluntary surgical procedure. But, thats what they recommend and ask you to think about it.

LOL, ask me ask me Happened in 2005, I had to get it out I was new in Vancouver and didn't have a regular dentist so went to a Pakistani dentist at the mall. He said not to worry and its gonna be OK So, there I go and the guy injects me like 5 times and his leg is over my chest so he can pull the lower one out, then the bastard realized that my molar is attached to the bone so instead of pulling it, he cracks em and tries to take em out in pieces. The guy is taking care of another patient side by side - I am swollen up so can't say anything Finally, I see the sweat on his forehead and he says he can't do it, so there I go with half-broken molar left out there and he tells me I have 2 options 1) Let it remain there and bone will grow over it 2) Goto a specialist as he is too afraid to get the remaining piece out as it's close to the nerve. If he damages the nerve, I lose the sensation on my left cheek forever So I take advice from 2 other dentist and they said I should get it out else in the future, I will go through tremendous agony to get the piece out So, I booked an appointment with an Indian specialists, put me in twilight sleep and got it without losing my sensation. I have 2 other molars left and no way I am living with it My 3rd most horrifying medical experience All the above was without insurance and the Pakistani dentist refunded my money ( yes, a refund from a dentist )

Thats no reassurance! :(( :(( :(( Anyone with good success stories? :D BTW, Rajeev what are the first 2 experiences? the above being your third :P And, Why did u go to the guy in the first place? Is it because you had some issue with the wisdom tooth that you went to the "dentist at a mall"? PS: I think TGIB will come in to this thread with a caution on how we should avoid dentists of the nationality that you visited first :D

Well, I was telling you my case ie., for Wisdom Teeth extraction .ASK the guy if you should see a specialist or not as molars are close to the nerve, thus experience is a must It was a cakewalk for the specialists and it also depends on what angle is the tooth I went to see the dentist coz it was paining in that area! otherwise " mere ko pagal kuthe ne kaata hain kya " :D Molar extraction was by far the worst other than that, removing a fish bone stuck in my throat ..last but no least, lets say I had to see an "ass doctor" and the horrifying part was a beautiful nurse helping the doc

DD, I dont have any pain - this is "proactive" thingy that dentists in US suggest to get the wisdom teeth out so it wont cause problems later even if there is no problem currently. They (dentists) say it is better to act before any problem arises. Rajeev: Yes, if I get it done, the dentist wont do it himself, he would refer to a surgeon who does this regularly. Those folks are supposed to be well trained in these things. But still such things do scare me, and I have to think positive :D

Reason is they are impacted, and only partially erupted. They can cause problems in the future - the dentist I have seen in India told me that US dentists will definitely ask me to get it out, and 3 dentists I have seen in US, all say "get it out" since it can cause complication. Ofcourse normal (non-doctor) folks do ask - Why touch it if it aint hurting? So, thats the dilemma between what laymen ask me, and what the dentists ask me to do. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/wisdom-teeth/DS00679/DSECTION=7

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/wisdom-teeth/DS00679/DSECTION=8 Some experts say that impacted wisdom teeth should always be removed, even if they aren't causing problems. The belief is that the impacted tooth will eventually cause problems, and that it's better to remove it when someone is younger and more likely to recover faster from surgery.

My dentist in Hong Kong suggested I have my lower wisdom teeth removed before they grew out - this was when I was 17 - as they'd be likely to cause serious pain when they came out. Had a very good surgery experience - top class hospital, fantastic surgeon/anasthesist, and the procedure went properly (they cut into the gums, removed the baby teeth before they came out and sealed the gums back up). Fair bit of pain right after, but that's expected. From what I've heard, it's less painful to remove the teeth like that before they actually start growing - apparently much worse when they're full size and taken out.

I've been to the dentist only ONCE in my life and that was when i was 12....I was in England, it was a Pakistani dentist ( i am NEVER going to a Pakistani doc again !) and i was there coz my teeth were staining for some unknow reason. His solution was to use some rotary tool to 'sc****' off the plaque. So he just straddled me and started whirring away with his rotary sc****r....after the first six teeth ( 3 upper and 3 lower frontal teeth), i'd had enough coz the pain was pretty bad. Since then, my front six teeth have furrows on them as he sc****d part of the enamel off and they are sensetive to cold food (like ice cream-which i cannot bite with my front teeth). Apart from that, i've never had a teeth problem and i STILL don't know what a toothache feels like. ( I never had toothache when my permanent teeth came out either- they just grew like hair on my body- not there one day, present the next).

I was never told to remove my wisdom teeth just for the sake of it.
did it grow out fully, or was it half or quarter at an angle? (impacted wisdom teeth?) If it grows out properly and normally, then there is NO ISSUE - nothing needs to be done. The main thing dentists say is that: "It is difficult to keep the area (pockets) around it clean, and because of that plaque can accumulate in that area. Also, that can affect normal teeth in surrounding area, so best to get rid of wisdom teeth that cannot grow fully". Does your dad have an opinion on impacted wisdom teeth? If so, do find out and post - thanx in advance :)
