Dubai: Dubai Public Prosecution has dropped a drug case against Mohammad Asif, a Pakistan cricketer who was caught carrying 0.24 grams of opium in his wallet, and will be deported soon, Gulf News learnt on Thursday afternoon. Mohammad Al Nuaimi, Public Prosecutor who handled Asif’s case, told Gulf News: "The case has been dropped against Mohammad Asif due to insignificance ... he will be deported as soon as the police finalise the procedures. It is definite that he committed the crime of smuggling and possessing 0.24 grams of opium as he was caught red-handed ... however at certain cases and for a faster litigation process the Public Prosecution drops a case due to insignificance and deports the suspect." Sources close to the investigation confirmed that the Pakistani cricketer will be deported within the next 48 hours.

So UAE government has bowed down to the pressure exerted by Paki embassy... Thing to note here is -- UAE and Islamic state of Pakisatan has a very good relations and incidentally UAE was one the very few countries which recognized Taliban as legitimate government in Afghanistan till last moment. That is why, all these political pressures has lead to realease of Asif, since UAE has drug laws which state that even if you are caught with possessing drug with no intention of consuming it, you have to serve more than 6 months in Jail.

Yep....UAE buckled under pressure UAE drug arrests surge in 2007 by Amy Glass on Tuesday, 19 February 2008 DRUG BUST: British tourists have been urged to be aware of the UAE's zero-tolerance on drugs. (Getty Images)The number of British tourists arrested for drug possession on arrival to the UAE has surged, the British Embassy in Dubai warned on Monday. Simon Goldsmith, media affairs spokesperson, British Embassy in Dubai, said there is a need for more awareness of the strict UAE drug laws among the country’s visitors. “We need to raise awareness of drugs, that there's a zero tolerance policy and you can go to prison for four years,” Goldsmith told UAE daily Gulf News. Story continues below ↓ advertisement There were 59 British citizens arrested in the UAE on drug-related charges in 2007, according to the British Foreign Office. These include Keith Brown who was jailed for four years after 0.003 grams of cannabis was found in the tread of his shoe, and British Radio 1 DJ Raymond Bingham, who was sentenced to four years jail on Tuesday, after he was caught with 2.16 grams of cannabis in November. The UAE’s drug laws are severe, despite its more liberal reputation among the Gulf nations, and strict rules stipulate imprisonment for a minimum of four years followed by deportation for those convicted of drug possession. People convicted of drugs trafficking can face capital punishment, although executions rarely take place. The warning from the British embassy follows a similar urgent caution from legal aid organization Fair Trials International earlier this month. Catherine Wolthuizen, chief executive at Fair Trials International, said the group had also noticed a steep increase in UAE drug charges against tourists over the last 18 months. “Customs authorities are using highly sensitive new equipment to conduct extremely thorough searches on travellers and if they find any amount, no matter how minute, it will be enough to attract a mandatory 4 year prison sentence.” Wolthuizen said many travellers did not realise they could be charged for possession of banned substances if they are detected in urine or bloodstream, or from tiny amounts on their person. Over a million British visitors are believed to have travelled to the UAE in 2007, while more than 100,000 British nationals are resident there. http://www.arabianbusiness.com/511622-brits-arrested-on-uae-drug-charges-on-the-rise

If Asif was indeed innocent, why were The Senate Standing Committee on Sports in Pakistan has requested the intervention of president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in securing the release of fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who has been in detention in Dubai for suspected possession of an illegal substance since June 1. "Mohammad Asif is a superstar of Pakistan and we should not leave him alone over there [Dubai] and should not spare any effort to bring him back," senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhary said during the committee meeting on Wednesday. "We request the president and the premier to intervene in the matter and bring back the superstar. Pak's President and Prime Minister sweating over his issue ?

Not surprising at all. In fact, its a bit odd that it took so long. No govt with common sense will ever allow one of its most high-profile sporting stars to serve a sentence in another country's prisons for customs' violation.

I wasn't caught with drugs, insists Asif June 20, 2008 14:37 IST Back home after 19 days of detention in Dubai, Pakistan pace spearhead Mohammad Asif [images] stuck to his guns, insisting that he was not caught with any contraband drugs by the authorities. The pacer claimed he was innocent which is why he was eventually released. "I never took any drugs or banned substances. I have never used drugs in my life and I challenge anyone to prove I do drugs. If I had taken any drugs I would have tested positive during laboratory tests in Dubai and also when I gave a random test during the Indian Premier League [images]," he said in Lahore [images] after returning from Dubai via Karachi. 91155.1.jpgAsif returns home from Dubai and is escorted by security officials after arriving at the Lahore airport He also rubbished reports that drug were recovered from his possession in Dubai. "It was no drug just a substance given to me by a local Hakeem." Asif, who is due to meet Pakistan cricket Board chairman Nasim Ashraf later on Friday, thanked the PCB chairman for securing his release. "They [the authorities in Dubai] kept me well but it was detention after all. I am thankful to the PCB chairman and officials that they didn't abandon me and kept on supporting me and fighting my case," the pacer said. Meanwhile, Ashraf told reporters in Lahore that after meeting Asif he would appoint a three member fact finding committee to look into the case documents which would be released by Dubai authorities. "We will have our own inquiry and first determine what really happened. If he is guilty of any offence he will face severe penalties. But let us get to the facts," Ashraf said. He said an internal inquiry would be held but he is happy to see Asif back in Pakistan. Asif, meanwhile, also denied misbehaving with airport authorities prior to his detention. "All such reports are fabricated and I will be taking up this issue with the people who gave this story. I never even spoke to any journalist during my detention," he said after reaching Lahore from Dubai via Karachi. Asif said two persons had approached him in Dubai posing as security men and said they wanted details of why he was being detained. "But I never told them I was drunk or misbehaved, yet next day this story was carried in sections of the media."

Pred, you taking bets on whether this fella will be slapped a ban that expires just before the India series this winter? An ICF dollar gets ten that he'll figure in that series. In fact, I am willing to spread bet at 25:1 and wager that Shoaib's ban will be abbreviated as well, to shoo him in for the same series. Some things in life are entirely predictable, as they say. What would we all do without the PCB in these uncertain times?
