when did this happen.. ?? According to the new rules, the batting side can decide when the third powerplay can be taken. This is unbelievable... batting side can easily save wickets till the end and go after bowlers in third powerplay after 35 overs..

It happened about a month ago. ---- One Powerplay Decided By Batting Side - ICC New Rule Last Update : 30-Sep-2008 13:29:00 IST In a move designed to make 50-over cricket even more loaded in favour of batsmen, the International cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced changes in ODI rules allowing the batting side to decide when to introduce one Powerplay, either the second or the third. Earlier, the fielding side decided when to bring in the second and third Powerplays, which are five over spells in the game in which fielding restrictions apply. ICC's new playing conditions come into effect from October 1 with the series between New Zealand and Bangladesh. The ICC chief executives' committee had met in June and unanimously approved the changes. ODI Rules Changed The batting team will be permitted to choose when one of either the second or third Powerplays takes place. Three fielders will be permitted outside the field restriction areas during the both second and third Powerplays Previously, the third field was allowed outside the circle during either the second or third Powerplay----

Yes, if they are smart enough - thats what they'll do. However, I dont like this rule change. Already enough power to batting sides.

Apparently it is a rule change to pace up the middle overs. Earlier overs 20-40 was predictable. Just take singles and wait for the bad ball to punish. This was they want to make it less predictable and more exciting. They might as well remove the middle overs and have a 30-30 or a 20-20! Whoa...it's all making sense now!
