New domestic one day batting record set

Recommended Posts

Amidst the chaos, hysteria and the odd game of cricket in the World Cup, there's much happening elsewhere. Wasim Jaffer, he so heavily derided earlier for having the temerity to make runs in trying circumstances and earning a one day cap for India, has just smashed the previous domestic one day record for the highest individual Ranji one day score. Chasing 300 at the Kotla has never been easy. Mumbai were set 298 by the efforts of Gambhir (105), Chopra (74) and Manhas (47). In spite of one of the best domestic attacks including Ashish Nehra, Ishant Sharma and Amit Bhandari, Jaffer slammed 170 not out to see Mumbai home and into the semi finals. Congrats to him - hopefully this shall give another reminder to selectors that hard hitting, cross-bat-swiping aggressors aren't the only thing we need at the top of the order. And that if Ganguly's grace, elegance and sheer class ever needs to be replaced in the opening slot in ODIs, Bombay has a ready-made replacement. Meanwhile, we may also have another. Ajinkya Rahane. Ravi, I trust, will be familiar with his rungetting exploits on the recent India U19 tour of NZ. He's yet to play for Bombay, but that's only because of how super-competitive the setup is there (37 time Ranji champs, what do you expect?) with not even a bloke like Vinit Indulkar getting a go. Watch for him next season - hopefully we'll commence with him starting for Mumbai in the Ranjis.
