Don't have the link to this column, apparently someone sent it via email. Sachin worth Rs 140cr in ads, corporates want him to stay By R. Mohan Chennai, April 1: A majority of cricket fans in India appear to want Sachin Tendulkar to quit playing cricket, or at least the one-day version of the game, but the corporate world is standing solidly behind its favourite brand ambassador. With almost Rs 140 crores in advertisements and sponsorships riding on the Mumbai superstar in the next four years, the corporate sector definitely does not want him to retire anytime soon. His estimated earnings are in excess of Rs 200 crores till date: of this Rs 185 crores have come from corporate ads and endorsements and only Rs 15 crores from official fees and other earnings. With the deals he has tied up with sports management companies till 2011, he is projected to earn a total of Rs 325 crores from ads and endorsements in his career: thus, with Rs 185 crores already in, he is due to get approximately Rs 140 crores more over the next four years. In dollar terms that would take his career riches beyond the $75 million mark: a very tidy sum from a sport that, unlike soccer and major pro sport in the US, does not make multi-millionaires. One national news channel released findings on Sunday showing that 64 per cent of viewers polled wanted Sachin to retire. A poll of 60 current and former first-class cricketers run by another news channel on Sunday said that 33 per cent were in favour of Sachin retiring from Tests and ODIs, while 56 per cent wanted him to retire only from ODIs and 11 per cent wanted him to announce his retirement from all cricket. A shift in public opinion against Sachin may also have something to do with his standing as the world?s richest cricketer, Shane Warne not excepted. As many as 66 per cent of readers polled in a DC-Asian Age SMS poll last week had said that Sachin should not be appointed captain. Several players did, however, spring to Sachin?s defence over the weekend, saying that he should not heed former Australian captain Ian Chappell?s call for him to retire from cricket immediately. Sachin?s own decision may lie beyond the formbook. Just two more years in the game would mean earnings of Rs 75 crores: to give this up would be almost akin to commercial suicide. If the contracted figures with his latest player management company bear fruit, then Sachin should be earning about Rs 35 crores a season from 2006 simply from his deal with Iconoix, the marketing wing of UK advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi. There are at least 11 brands ? Pepsi, Canon, Sunfeast, Boost, Adidas, Reynolds, ESPN-Star, Sanyo, MRF, Visa, National Egg Coordination Committee ? that Sachin is currently promoting at a very active level in terms of public exposure through advertisement campaigns. His earnings from the corporate world in promoting about 20 brands and services are massive, compared to what he rakes in from the game itself. His direct earnings from the game include Rs 50 lakhs a year as the contracted sum for players of the top bracket, plus Rs 1.6 lakh for every ODI and Rs 2.6 lakh for every Test match played. The figures in Sachin?s case are staggering since 1996, when the late Mark Mascarenhas, a television honcho from Connecticut in the US, signed him on for Rs 40 crores for five years. The 5-year contract that ran till 2001 was renewed at Rs 20 crores per annum. Amid this story of riches, what sticks out like a sore thumb is the matter of the import of a flaming red Ferrari (Moedna 360) in 2003, avowedly for his equalling Sir Donald Bradman?s Test record of 29 centuries. Sachin was the brand ambassador for the Italian automobile giant Fiat, which also owns and makes Ferraris, and the gift was handed over by Michael Schumacher. Quite apart from Corporate India seeking his image to sell its products, even governments have been prone to cashing in on Sachin?s image, the most stark example being the waiving of the entire customs duty component of Rs 1.13 crore on his Ferrari by then finance minister Jaswant Singh in the NDA government.

Re: Sachin worth Rs 140cr in ads, corporates want him to stay This is being blown out of proportion. Yes he makes all the money because he has an opertunity ! Heck anybody in his place will not refuse the money. He still has a couple of good cricket years left in him. He will be back. The next overseas tours to Eng and Aus this year will tell us the story.

Re: Sachin worth Rs 140cr in ads, corporates want him to stay I agree, he has to make hay while the sun shines. That said you don't want that to be a stumbling block when it comes to making a decision. If truly he has lost love for the game and is going to continue just because he has to fulfill the sponsor's needs for the next four years he is only doing damage to his reputation. The sponsors usually are fair weather friends, they will desert him if his form sucks in the coming years. It will only cause his reputation a major damage if it already has not. I hope he gives it another 6 months and if his form doesn't improve he should hang is boots. There is no point hanging around to score 20s -30s against good teams and bash the minnows.

So how much do these corporate pay Pawar and co to keep selecting Sachin for next 4 years ???
That's the question reporters should be after and expose if there is even an iota of truth to it. This article unfortunately has no substance in that regard.

Re: Sachin worth Rs 140cr in ads, corporates want him to stay A 50 years old Kapil Dev is probably better than most of our current players, but does that mean we bring him back? Don't we want to build a team for the future? Don't we wish ensure that fiascoes like in WC 2007 does not occur in future?

Re: Sachin worth Rs 140cr in ads, corporates want him to stay If we drop sachin now, we will hear a unanimous bring him back when we lose the next game. Indian public is very fickle. 2 bad performances doesnt warrant a drop esp for sachin.. I will agree to drop him when we find someone better. Right now, only dravid and yuvi are as good as him. Ganguly had a good run but watching him in the WC was horrible. He didnt really get into any sort of groove. Anyway that still leaves us with 2 batsmen much worse than Sachin.
