DesiChap
After Greg, BCCI sweats over Rahul TIMES NEWS NETWORK / Sumit Mukherjee MUMBAI, April 4: Greg Chappell's sudden change of heart vis-a-vis his job as the national cricket coach caught his employers, the BCCI, off-guard on Wednesday. With the senior players rising in rebellion against the coach and a TV baron threatening to launch a parallel, Packer-style pro league, the BCCI finds itself surrounded by problems that need quick solutions with long-lasting results. It's also increasingly getting jittery about whether skipper Rahul Dravid would agree to keep the captaincy in Chappell's absence. If Dravid also surrenders, the ?rebels' would have engineered a complete rout. India would then head for Bangladesh with a new coach, captain and a host of fresh faces where they will pay two Tests and three one-day internationals. At this juncture, the BCCI can ill-afford to alienate the players, no matter how fragmented the side is. Finding a new coach would be a top priority especially as India's tour of Bangladesh is just one month away. They may have to settle for a desi variety till an imported specimen arrives, but setting the house in order may have to simply wait. Having forced Chappell's hand, the players are generally gloating over their ?kill', but little do they realise that they are in the good books of no one in the BCCI. Chappell's decision to pull out of the race has taken the fizz out of Friday's review committee meeting where the BCCI mandarins had planned to grill Chappell for the team's showing in the World Cup. Both parties will still go through the motions and it remains to be seen whether Chappell lists all the ills that afflict Indian cricket in graphic detail and citing specific examples, or merely glosses over it. "I will be honest and truthful in what I tell the BCCI,'' Chappell told TOI . He feels that a post mortem of India's World Cup show is important to get to the root of the problem. "There is life beyond the World Cup for Indian cricket, which must not only pick up the pieces, but as the largest cricket-playing nation, must also learn to lead the way,'' he added. The BCCI has no complaints from Chappell as such. "He could hardly be faulted on cricketing issues, but he did lack managerial skills. He ought to have been more tactful in dealing with some of the players and the media. The best thing about him, however, was that he had no vested interests in Indian cricket,'' a senior BCCI official, summed up Chappell's tenure nicely. It would also leave the former captains with very little to during their afternoon session with the Board officials. The BCCI is still hoping that Chappell would provide the ammunition that it could use against the seniors, now, or at a later date. Strangely enough, most BCCI officials do not expect tour manager Sanjay Jagdale to submit a strongly-worded report. Jagdale, who is also a national selector, is likely to corroborate Chappell on the seniors' attitude, but is unlikely to take names, which should work to the advantage of the ?rebels'. This is interesting. If Jagdale also says the same things as Chappell in his report, where does that leave the 'seniors' and their slef professed love of the 'juniors'? Link to comment
