MUMBAISKIPPER
C Rajshekhar Rao / DNA Wednesday, July 15, 2009 2:56 IST www.dnaindia.com New Delhi: The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has all but inked a deal with legendary pace bowler Wasim Akram as a coach for the upcoming season. Though his media and other commitments will not allow the former Pakistan skipper to be with the team through the season, he is expected to spend substantial time honing the skills of players. The DDCA officials would like him to be called a coach rather than a consultant. "He will be a coach and we expect him to be with the team for 10 or 12 days during a camp before the season, to begin with," said DDCA sports secretary Sunil Dev. "His vast experience will benefit all the players, not just pace bowlers," he added. Akram had been associated with the DDCA last year too, when he held a two-day clinic for upcoming pace bowlers as part of a joint venture with a cricket academy. The name of Jonty Rhodes was also doing the rounds for the job, but sources say the South African was proving to be an expensive proposition at almost Rs. one lakh per day. Akram is reportedly being roped in for Rs. 75,000 per day. Officials felt that Rhodes's expertise was in fielding and Akram being a better rounded player during his heyday and his bigger achievements in international cricket made the choice easy. The DDCA is also believed to be keen to get on board former India players Gundappa Viswanath and Shivlal Yadav as consultants. Link to comment
