Mahela does a Ganguly, keeps Ponting waiting Agencies Posted online: Friday, April 27, 2007 at 1555 hours IST Melbourne, April 27: Ahead of the cricket World Cup final clash on Saturday, Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene has taken a cue from Sourav Ganguly's successful ploy to unnerve the Australians. Much to the annoyance of Ricky Ponting, the Sri Lankan captain turned up an hour late for a scheduled beach photo shoot with the Australian skipper and the Cup to promote Saturday's final, according to a media report. Ponting made the appointment despite having to travel with his team from St Lucia to Barbados and had to twiddle his thumbs before Jayawardene arrived after attending a golf function, according to The Age. "Bit late are you?" the report quoted Ponting as saying to Jayawardene. "I did not know about this, seriously," Jayawardene said blaming a communication breakdown and peak-hour traffic jam for his late arrival. The report said the Australian skipper was not very happy with Jayawardene's late showing. "Given the amount of travel that had taken place, for the Australian captain to be left waiting for an hour with 100 media lining up on the beach and the sun going down was very unfortunate," said an Australian team source. Ganguly had kept hard-nosed Steve Waugh waiting for the toss on several occasions during Australia's tour of India in 2001 which irked the then Australian skipper. Australia and Sri Lanka shares a bitter cricketing rivalry which dates back to 1995 when Muttiah Muralitharan was called for chucking by umpire Darell Hair. Sri Lanka's resting of its key bowlers Chaminda Vaas, Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga for the Super Eights clash have also not gone too well with Australia.
