Fernando faces flak Colombo: Irate Sri Lankan cricket fans are going online to flay cricketer-turned-commentator Ranjit Fernando for allegedly mispronouncing names and siding with opponents at the ongoing World Cup. Bloggers are accusing Fernando of bad English, a lack of cricketing knowledge, monotonous delivery and echoing his co-commentator's expressions. ``He only has to utter the words `the batsmen are looking very comfortable out in the middle' for a Lankan wicket to fall,'' complains a blogger at a weblog. Good laugh ``It's a good laugh when he starts off a long sentence, and towards the end there is no connection to the start,'' wrote another fan. The blog, which went online on April 6 after Sri Lanka defeated England, is run by an annoyed cricket fan, who says the site is ``dedicated to highlighting the shameful cricket commentaries given by Ranjit Fernando.'' The blogger says his biggest grouse against Fernando is ``that he is not always and certainly not fully behind the Sri Lankan cricket team. ``While being impartial is expected, you are certainly not expected to belittle the efforts of the country you represent.'' With over 11,500 hits having been recorded on the site, many visitors are leaving comments dripping with sarcasm or exasperation. Favourites In the ``Ranjit Fernando Favourites'' section, some of the hackneyed phrases he uses are listed and it includes ``breaking the shackles,'' ``sweeps and sweeps well,'' ``pitch has good carry'' and ``this is a pressure cooker situation.'' Invitations to add to the list brought a volley of responses including one which has Fernando saying: ``It's a four. Oh no! He's out! He's clean bowled! I thought it went for four!'' The blog invites visitors to petition, among others, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board to get Fernando replaced by someone else. ? PTI
