Aqua
Suppose you are on an elevator on the 16th floor of a building, when the cable breaks. As you plummet toward the ground, you recall that you once heard that by jumping up fast at the instant of impact, you can escape death. You also recall that the floors are twelve feet apart and that the acceleration of a falling object is 32 feet per second squared. When should you jump? Aqua
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? what if you were on the floor when it lands? plus, dont forget, that the cable is broken... i doubt the door opens then... u'll be stuck inside for ever... yoda
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? keep jumping as fast as you can and as high as you can so that you can increase probability of staying up when there is impact. i meant door opens as in you survive the impact and emergency folks eventually get to the door and get it to open.

DesiChap
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? You are about to die and you have "common sense" for calculations. You will die no matter what, jumping will not save you from a fall from 16th floor. :dead:
gator
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? we did those calculations in our physics exam in high school... and the answer is, it is humanly impossible for u to jump with tht kinda acceleration.... varun
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? Mythbusters did a segment, where they calculated the acceleration needed, and rigged a chair to provide a dummy inside the doomed elevator with the appropriate lift at the point of impact. The dummy still suffered sufficient impact to cause sure death, and they concluded that it is just a myth that jumping will save u, 'coz there are many other factors involved. Aqua
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? okay, do you think when you are on your way down, would you be able to think it out...? I'm quite sure that in such a situation, you panic and u dont think... :wtg: So, would you ba able to calculate exactly at which second to jump? or are you able to think abt anything? Ok, so take it that ur able to... So exactly which second are you supposed to jump? :hic:
Bumper
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? It never helps to jump up & down, least of all when u are sure to go down. Just grab someone on the way & take them down with u. Think Abe :hic:

Aqua
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? Another one... Nine dots are arranged in a three by three square. Connect each of the nine dots using only four straight lines and without lifting your pen from the paper.

yoda
Re: Common Sense, so you have any? write down the numbers as is on a piece of paper and connect them in sequence. Start from 1, join it with 2, go to 3, and so on till 14. 1, 4, 8, 3, 6/9, 12, 7, 11, 14 are your nine positions. You should get a line across from 1 through 14 (line 1) and 3 lines across that main line from 3 to 4 (line 2), 7 to 8 through 6/9 (line 3), 11 to 12 (line 4). You would impact between the 2nd and 3rd second after the cable broke, so you would want to jump 2 seconds after the break. However, considering the calculations involved, you would probably end up as a heap of screaming bloody mess at the bottom of the elevator shaft before you figured the answer out. Besides, there's no telling if jumping really works.
