The Indian man who claimed he was set alight by a gang of people last month has now been charged with 'making a false report to police and criminal damage with a view to gaining financial advantage'. Jaspreet Singh, 29, of Grice Crescent, Essendon, in the city's north, faced an out-of-sessions hearing early this morning before a bail justice at St Kilda Road police complex. The alleged incident took place shortly after the apparent murder of Indian graduate Nitin Garg in Footscray, and the report fuelled the fire in relation to the Indian government's view that Melbourne is an unsafe place to be for Indian nationals. Singh, who is in Australia on his wife's student visa, told police he was doused with petrol and set alight as he parked his car near his home early on Saturday, January 8. Singh was taken to The Alfred hospital with burns to 15 per cent of his body, affecting his face, arms and hands. But Detective Senior Constable Danielle O'Keefe of the arson and explosives squad told the hearing Singh suffered the burns while trying to torch his 2003 Ford Futura. Detective O'Keefe said arson chemists and hospital staff had concluded the damage to the car, Singh's clothes and his injuries were not consistent with his story. "Police inquiries have led us to believe that Mr Singh is in some financial difficulty and that he intended to sell his car but instead stood to gain $11,000 from an insurance claim out of this particular incident," she told the hearing. Police had obtained security footage depicting Singh buying a 15-litre opaque plastic container and 15.96 litres of petrol on the day before the attack. The container and other evidence was found at his unit when he was arrested yesterday, Detective O'Keefe said. She said Singh had been very co-operative but denied all allegations. His wife had been questioned about her knowledge of the incident, she said. Burns were still obvious on Singh's face and neck, and he wore pressure bandages on his arms. Through an interpreter, Singh told the hearing he and his wife planned a holiday to India, leaving on February 20 and returning in late April to visit his child and extended family. Detective O'Keefe said police did not oppose bail but noted that Mr Singh was a potential flight risk. The bail justice, who declined to be named, granted him bail with strict conditions banning him from contacting witnesses and attending points of international departure. He must report to police three times a week and surrender his passport. He will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on March 15. At the time, police Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Neil Smyth described the attack as "a bit strange" and said there was no evidence the attack was racially motivated. :hmmm:

So a footage of someone buying a plastic container & petrol makes him guilty of setting himself on fire? :hysterical: As in, seriously, what is average IQ level of the Australian police officers? Why is it so difficult for them to admit the obvious - that Australia is a racist country? :finger:

An Indian man lied about being racially attacked, claims Australian police. The police say Jaspreet Singh confessed to burning his car to claim insurance after alleging that he was racially attacked. Police say he made up the story after accidentally setting himself on fire, while torching his car in an insurance fraud scheme.
Now whats your IQ ? They have not denied that there are some cases where the attacks were racist but not all .. especially this one

^^^

The police say Jaspreet Singh confessed to burning his car to claim insurance after alleging that he was racially attacked.
AND
But President of Federation of Indian Students in Australia Gautam Gupta says Singh should get a fair legal trial. "Police have just charged him. Jaspreet Singh is innocent till proven guilty. His family is denying the charges and we should give equal weightage to the case as well. We have to see how the case plays out. Is Jaspreet going to get a fair go in the legal system? Is the Indian government going to provide him a proper legal representation?" asks Gupta.
Aren't these two parts of the same story a bit contradicting? And 1 incident of possible non-racist motives is not > than over a 100 attacks in the past yr (Times Now quoted nos.) where racism has been blatantly involved

yaar the thing is ke koi doodh ka dhula nahi hai .. Since these attacks started people have called Aus racist even if they drop a spoon while eating. Students calling cops when they werent allowed entry in a pub .. India media going OTT in blaming all attacks as racists and Aussie Media going OTT in saying its all Indians' fault. The stats war started where they compared number of murders in india per capita to Aus.. I mean WTF .. on the other hand Indian media screams even without knowing/waiting for the entire truth. there is racism but by making it seem like war , they are going to make Aussies defensive which is not good for Indians in aus

how the hell do we force these mofos to take up this issue of students getting killed seriously without making a big fuss about it? if the cops were acting responsibly, do you think people would have gone to these lengths?

Exactly. The comparisons their media make are ridiculous & the reaction they get from our media has actually been a long time coming - http://voxpopuli7.tumblr.com/post/117163673/proud-racist-aussie The Aussies are just calling for trouble and remove their pants the moment they are criticized :bumsmack:. The fact is NOT EVERY AUSSIE is Racist and not every Indian is a mischief-maker. :two_thumbs_up:
