Cricket: Former Australian PM John Howard wins nod for ICC post

John Howard, as the PM of the Australia, probably had the most hard-line, conservative, right-wing reputation of all Western Premiers of democracies. He was openly anti-immigration, absolutely merciless when it came to giving asylum to refugees. So, it should be interesting to see if that precedent impacts his tenure as ICC President, especially given the general perception among Asian countries that they're discriminated against by the ICC. But in general, the increasing trend of ex-/current politicians become ICC Presidents is worrying. Political appointment dont generally bode well for any sport, just look at Pakistan.

John Howard nominated for ICC presidency John Howard, the former Australian prime minister, has finally been nominated by the boards of Australia and New Zealand as their candidate for the post of ICC president from 2012. Howard, who led the country from 1996 to 2007, will have the position rubber stamped in June and will succeed India's Sharad Pawar in two years. The decision ends a long-running dispute over the preferred Australasian candidate. Cricket Australia searched outside their board of directors for a nomination and wanted Howard, who admits to being a cricket tragic, while New Zealand Cricket recommended its former chairman Sir John Anderson. Howard is a 70-year-old with no background in cricket administration but was pursued by Cricket Australia for his diplomatic skills. Jack Clarke, Cricket Australia's chairman, and his New Zealand counterpart Alan Isaac issued a joint release saying they were pleased Howard had agreed to take on the role, which begins as vice-president in June. Howard said in the statement he was honoured and humbled to receive the recommendation for the appointment, but believed it would be inappropriate to comment until the post became official in June. However, he was more expansive in a release from the ICC. "It is a great honour to be nominated by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket for the vice-presidency of the International Cricket Council from June-July 2010," he said. "Cricket has been one of my lifelong passions and, if the ICC accepts my nomination, it will be a privilege to serve this great game." The countries' boards set up a committee including an independent member in the businessman Sir Rod Eddington to decide who should be nominated. "It was an extremely difficult decision and ultimately relied on the input of Sir Rod Eddington, whom both cricket boards respect enormously," Clarke and Isaac said. "The ICC faces significant and complex internal and external challenges in its quest for cricket to become a genuinely global sport. Australia and New Zealand considered a number of distinguished candidates of global stature before deciding to invite John Howard to consider the role." The ICC presidency is given to countries by rotation and the incumbent David Morgan, the ECB's representative, will hand the responsibility to Pawar in June. Howard will then act as vice-president and take over after Pawar's two-year tenure ends. His nomination will be approved at the ICC's executive board meeting in April and the position will be finalised at the annual conference in the middle of the year. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/current/story/450524.html Picture of the DAY 75257.2.jpg I've got your team covered :punter:

People writing comments on this CricInfo article seem completely heartbroken. And I'm disappointed to see someone as dominating and arrogant to be elevated to the role of President of ICC for his "diplomatic skills". What a bunch of rubbish! We all know he's got the nod coz he has the guts to stand-up to the BCCI. Having said that, BCCI is the BOSS, whether we have a President or not.

Just cuz he is an ex-PM who happens to be a keen cricket follower gives him the qualification to run ICC :dontknow: MM, His immigration policies were most liniment at least for skilled migrants .. although he ****ed it up by opening the gates without any check\planning :wall: PS: he was pathetic when it came to refugees though

^ Money talks. Its no secret that they don't rate John Howard highly.

"It is seen as a bit of an early April Fool's joke over here ... Next we will nominate [former New Zealand Prime Minister] Helen Clark to take over world rugby league" - New Zealand journalist Richard Boock on former Australian Prime Minister John Howard being a candidate for the ICC's top job

Awesome, John Howard isn't a leftist or a terrorist, this is exactly what we need in Cricket now! Who knows what could happen in Pakistan these days with terrorists and cricket; Howard would be great for the ICC. This also sends a strong message that the ICC is against aborting babies and allowing illegals to flood countries and break laws. Go Cricket ftw! Show the world we are leading!

Howard was known for his extreme far right views. It would be a shame if Howard becomes presidenrt because cricket today is dominated by people of colour
Dont bring race into it too much, so Howards should not get the job because he white?

^ thats just lame from Murali. Howard called chucker a chucker .. its like if some Indian is denied a position for calling Afridi a ball eater ...
No its not lame. As an Aussie PM, he had no business calling anyone a chucker or cheater etc. He had no business commenting on someone's cricket that too who was not from his country and was visiting as a guest. Murali could've easily said (when John called him a chucker) that Australians are racist and their PM is just singling him out based on his color/ethnicity, because that too would've been 'calling a spade a spade'. Sometimes you just have to mind your bloody business is all I am saying.
