US soldier admits Iraq girl rape US investigations into deaths A US Army soldier has pleaded guilty to raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and helping murder her and her family. James Barker agreed to the plea deal at the start of his court-martial in the US to avoid the death penalty, his civilian lawyer said. A criminal investigation began in June into the killing of the family of four in their home in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad, in March 2006. Specialist Barker is one of four US soldiers charged with murder. They are alleged to have helped a former private - who has since been discharged from the army - to plan, carry out and cover up the attack. Two of the soldiers could face the death penalty if found guilty. All four soldiers belong to the 2nd Brigade of the elite 101st Airborne Division. Separate trial Specialist Barker had agreed to co-operate with prosecutors and will testify against the others, his civilian lawyer, David Sheldon, said. US troops have been accused of several abuses in Iraq The others charged with rape and murder were Pte Jesse Spielman, Sgt Paul Cortez, and Pte Bryan Howard. In addition, former soldier Steven Green has been charged in a civilian court and is awaiting trial in a Kentucky jail. He was discharged from the army for a personality disorder earlier this year, and in July pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and sexual assault. He cannot have death penalty like Saddam Hussein beause he is american.

Re: US Soldier raped 14yr old Iraqi girl and kills 6 civilians As much as everyone like to hate us and us army can u point out any other army charging their soldiers in middle of war with this kind of crime and punishing them........ Heck our parasite even after 35 years are yet to punish even a single soldier for mass killing and rape of bangaladesh....

Re: US Soldier raped 14yr old Iraqi girl and kills 6 civilians Agree DR, but you don't expect US army to behave like savages. And it's not like they charge everyone, like their marines got away with shooting a whole family including very young children just because they thought they heard and thought they were being shot at. I'm pretty sure there have been numerous similar incidents. It's not an anomaly. Worse things happened in Vietnam too.

Bottom line is once they get caught they should be duely punsihed which is exactly what is happening here as opposed tyo the president of the state coming on public TV and exhorting the rape victim to leave the state otherwise her life maybe in danger.. I hope people see the difference.. Nobody claims that USA army is consternation of saints for that matter no army is..

Re: US Soldier raped 14yr old Iraqi girl and kills 6 civilians If you compare any army or prez with Mushy it's really no use. But as I said, it's not like US army punishes every crime, actually the punished ones are anomalies, often caused by public outcry.

Re: US Soldier raped 14yr old Iraqi girl and kills 6 civilians I see no difference between these folks and the freakin terrorists. They should be treated like wise. These are in fact worst kind, using the uniform and abusing the power.

I guess cases like these need to be highlighted more.. This is where the victim gets penalised and conspiracy of silence enveloped whole islamic world.. http://dawn.com/weekly/mazdak/mazdak.htm TRY this for a scenario: a young woman is gang-raped in, say, the US. The rapists are given a few months, while the victim is sentenced to three months in jail as well as 90 lashes. And when her lawyer appeals for a stiffer sentence for the men, it is her sentence that is doubled. We can imagine the worldwide uproar had such a grotesque travesty actually taken place. Except that it has, in Saudi Arabia, not the US. In much of the Muslim world, this horrifying episode has been virtually blanked out of the public consciousness, with the media maintaining a discreet silence. from the same article: The reality is that this whole notion of a vast Islamic brotherhood stretching from Morocco to Indonesia does not bear close examination. Over the years, despite much bombast and tall claims about Islamic unity, Muslim countries have done exactly what suited them, without any consideration of what was good for the ummah. The reason this polite fiction is kept alive, in public at least, is that Muslim rulers can exploit such popular sentiments when it suits them. So although there were no public protests in the Islamic world when Iraq invaded Iran in 1980, or Kuwait in 1990, many Muslims did stage protests against the American-led invasions of Iraq in 1990, and then in 2003. But it should be noted that the massive demonstrations in western capitals against the second Gulf War were far larger than those organised by Muslims.

What does this last comment have to do with a court-martial that will obviously take place in the States. It has absolutely nothing to do with him being American why he cannot have the death penalty. It is because he has made a plea in Kentucky (I think) and will help testity against the other involvees.

This guy isn't a run-of-the-mill sex-offender (if there is such a thing) as you make it sound. First he raped a minor 14 year old girl (don't know if you have a younger sis or a daughter, but if you do, you might relate to the horror of this act in itself). Then he assisted in murdering her, and her family. Sick Sick man. Many such psychopaths in the american penal system are given the death penalty especially in the South.

I understand he is a pri$k rest assured if he deserves death penalty he will get that too.. certainly won't be let off in saudi or any othe shariah state style.. what i object to is the attempt to equate him with characters like saddam..

Depends how you see it. With his very limited power this guy could do this stuff, what do you think he'd do if he had got so much power and money like Saddam? And btw, he won't get death penalty. Hell I don't think he'll even serve 5 yrs in jail. That's how military court works.
