A country of a billion people, with a million ethnic groups that speak a hundred different languages, and yet they hold free and fair elections. Imagine if India was like Iraq today, the whole world would be shaking. I was in South America recently, and I wrote a column to say to them, look you can either emulate a dictator China or a democratic India. That is, either you can have a dictator selling your oil, steel, timber, and to China, and that?s a good business for a while, you know, or you can emulate India and drill your own people, and not just your oil resources. India is really providing a model for the developing world. Because you know, it is one thing to say, ?Be like America.? People say, ?Oh, how can we be like Microsoft, Intel?? But if I say to them, ?Be like India?, these people develop their own engines of growth...

Friedman just loves India, and anyone who loves democracy can't help that sentiment. As bush would say Billion people in functionign democracy has to be a modern day miracle.
