NEW DELHI: Living up to his promise of presenting a "good budget," Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Monday slashed upper class fares up to eight per cent, effected a token reduction of a rupee in second class ordinary fares, and reduced freight rates on diesel, petrol, minerals and ores while refraining from an across-the-board freight hike. Presenting the Railway budget for 2007-08 in Parliament, Mr. Prasad announced the introduction of 40 new trains, including eight air-conditioned "Garib Raths." He announced the route extension of 23 trains and an increase in frequency of 14 others. A total of 800 more coaches would be attached to popular trains, all unreserved second-class coaches would get upholstered seats, and their number would be increased from four to six in all new trains. Reduction in e-ticket charges for sleeper and air-conditioned (AC) classes from Rs. 25 to Rs. 15 and Rs. 40 to Rs. 20 was also announced. http://www.hindu.com/2007/02/27/stories/2007022708760100.htm

Re: Lalu announces more trains...

Hopefully there is money allocated to modernize the stations and increase security as well.
There are provisions for them. - Door frame, handheld metal detectors to detect bombs in sensitive divisions - CCTVs, smart video cameras for sensitive stations http://www.financialexpress.com/latest_full_story.php?content_id=156064 There were talks of creating modern railway stations and adding tv on most train as well. Check the Editorial of Business Newspaper tomorrow. Hopefully will have some details in them. xx

Re: Lalu announces more trains...

btw' date=' what is an air-conditioned "Garib Rath"?[/quote'] 600 rs price from delhi to muzaffarrpur in a/c three tier where the normal price fo the same class in other trains is around Rs 1000... although not many garibs travel in that because general class reservation ticket costs around 400 for same stretch of journey and surplus 200 rs is way too much for garib ........
