Eight Indian states account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African countries combined, a new measure of global poverty has found. The Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, have 421 million "poor" people, the study found. This is more than the 410 million poor in the poorest African countries, it said. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures a range of "deprivations" at household levels. Developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UN support, it will feature in the upcoming UNDP Human Development Report. The measure assess a number of "deprivations" in households - from education to health to assets and services. "The MPI is like a high resolution lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of challenges facing the poorest households," said OPHI director Dr Sabina Alkire. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10609407

Surely, we should at least a minimum social security net for our under-privileged citizens – A roof to live under, 3 reasonable meals a day, access to sanitation and drinking water. How can we just stand back and watch as 100s of millions of our citizens wallow in untold poverty? But one of the greatest ironies of our times is the fact that we have somehow reconciled with the blatant contradictions that has come to represent the world economic system today. If United Citizens lose their jobs in a recession, then the US govt. will spend 800 billion dollars mending roads and re-painting garden fences, just to give jobs its unemployed. If people still cannot find employment, the govt. will then try to extend unemployment benefits till the time they get a job. I don’t know if there was a bigger socialist state in the history of mankind than this? While this farce is happening in one end of the world, the Indian govt. is forced to remove subsidies on petrol to conform to World bank requirements and balance our budget, at a time when food inflation is already at record breaking levels. As always, it is capitalism for the poor, socialism for the rich!

We don’t want our country to become a utopian socialist state where the govt. takes care of people by brushing the peoples’ teeth when they get up in the morning, to organizing their funereal when they die. But how could we simply stand back and watch as, not 100s or 100s or even millions, but 100s of millions of people suffer from debilitating poverty, every single day of their life? Does this not go against the basic grain of humanity? Does this not conflict with our altruistic genes, the very same genes that elevate us above other animal species? When 3000 Americans died in a terror attack, the world changed forever. Two Trillion dollars were spent in 2 ongoing wars, one of which was based on completely fabricated evidence. But when 1000s of people die a slow, invisible death due to poverty, why doesn’t anyone care?

India is a wounded civilization. We have been tormented first by islamic invaders, then by the economic and cultural imperialism of the west. The last 20 have been the best years for our nation from the time great hindu dynasties have collapsed. Surely we cannot erase the damage of centuries in a matter of decades.
