Where would you place your fielders?

Recommended Posts

I have seen a lot of criticism for the Indian captain Dhoni with reference to his placement of fielders on the cricket field. You are the bowling captain. First over of a test match. And the batsman is right handed with Ishant Sharma to open, where would you place your fielders so that the field placement is attacking as well as you dont leak too many runs Now, out of the 11 players, one is the bowler , one a wicket keeper, and you need a minimum of 2 slips. so where would you place your remaining 7 fielders? COme one guys, put on your thinking caps and have a go at this. I want to see where ICF member place their fielders. :--D Here is an image for your reference. cricket-fielding-positions.gif

I don't blame Dhoni. When you're supposed best strike bowler can't even get tail enders out and instead is getting slogged all over the park by Malinga/Herath then you can't set any kind of field for that. What exact field placings was Dhoni supposed to set when Bhajji was getting tonked around the park for boundaries by Malinga and Herath? In the end Dhoni did the ONLY thing he could do. Take Bhajji off. And secondly Ishant didn't get going at all until around the time we got the 2nd new ball. If Ishant had bowled like that with the first new ball it would have been a completely different story.

Thirdman and Cover area leaked lot of runs. The present difference of runs is all part of those extra runs leaked behind the wicket to the tailend batsmen. Even if the runs leaked due to bad field placement is just a small part of the total, it does help in relieving the pressure on the batsmen, first up and hence allowing them to gain confidence and thrash the bowling all over the ground later..

We can try and be as inventive as we want with our fielders, but our bowlers will come up with even more inventive ways to gift the opposition runs. Our bowlers strike no fear whatsoever into the opposition batsman, even bowlers like Harbhajan get thrased around. Therefore any field placings will be ineffective, as the batsmans already decided that the bowlers are garbage, and will make an extra effort to make sure that the bowler doeesn't strike any rhythm or have time to form any plans.

its not so much the runs that Herath n Malinga scored.its the pace which they scored.everyone knew they wanted to score 500 ASAP n then declare.if we could've set defensive fields,it could've delayed the declaration or may even hv got the wickets as tail isnt expected to be patient with singles for long n ofcourse tailender score mostly thru 3rd man.that could've been stopped too. its not as if i'm defending the bowlers.they sure bowled terribly n were the main culprits.but even with that we could've been in much better position with some smartness n match awareness

But Thirdman and sweeper cover are a must. Our bowlers are pathetic and hence Dhoni missed a trick in not covering those two areas for a long time. He did coverd them as if like an afterthought but by then it was too late. He even kept thos areas uncovered when the tailenders were batting. As if to invite them to make lose shots. Dhoni had a major brain fart in this match. No matter how much we reason, he has completely lost it with his field placings..

Had there been a 3rd man and a sweeper cover, then he would been slated for being ultra defensive... Why are we blaming the field settings here? The real problem was the 9 chances that we muffed (including half chances). Thats like Giving Sri Lanka two complete innings in a single inning!! COmpare that to Lanka who have hardly put donw even a half chance.
