ICC are looking at doing a semis and final format, the top four ranked teams playing in semis and the winners playing for the title of Champions. Why not just scrap the ranking table and set out a better format ? Draw teams into four groups of three, with the best two non-Test nations invited to compete. Play round robin home and away and then the winners go into semis and then a final. The rest of the groups could then play their own semis and final for placings upon which the groups for the next tournament will be based. With only three teams per group there would be resting time for one of the teams each time, that has to be good - or they could play a Test series against another team not playing at the same time as a competitive game but not counting towards the Championship. Series to be four matches long, group placings decided purely on most wins and then most draws and then head to head with away wins counting double if it came to a tie even then Proposed World Championship - Twelve countries split into four groups of three teams to play round robin home and away. - Top two non-Test nations to make up the twelve - Series to be of four Tests - Sides not playing during a round of matches may play each other in competitive series not counting towards the Championship - Top side in each group plays a randomly drawn semi final of four Tests home and away to decide the finalists. - The rest play each other for placings, or perhaps the bottom sides in each group play the next top four non-Test nations for a place in the subsequent Championship. - Placings to be decided by Tests won, then most draws, then head to head. Teams level on head to head to have away wins count double, if they can't be split then they can be split by other means such as a draw of lots, or better still, the highest runs per wicket It is a draft proposal, doesn't mean it has to run exactly like that. It has the scope to be expanded beyond twelve teams. And anyone picking up on the four Test series length and saying it could end in a draw, so too can odd length Test and ODI series as there are DRAWS in Test matches.
