Congrats! India joins the elite group of nation to to launch satellites commercially. First commerical launch of PSLV-C8 successful [23 Apr, 2007 l 1541 hrs ISTlPTI] CHENNAI: The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C8 (PSLV-C8) has been launched successfully today from Sriharikota. PSLV is carrying the Italian Satellite Agile along with it. The countdown progressed smoothly for the first commercial launch of PSLV-C8 with a 352 kg Italian astronomical satellite onboard from Sriharikota spaceport, about 150 kms from Chennai. “The atmosphere is calm and quiet. Countdown is progressing as per schedule," said an ISRO spokesman. The launch vehicle lifted off at 1530 hrs. The 42-hour countdown for the launch of the 11th flight of PSLV-C8 began on Friday evening. It was launched from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR. Apart from the Italian satellite, Agile, PSLV-C8 would also carry an Advanced Avionics Module (AAM), weighing 185 kg, to test advanced launch vehicle avionics systems like mission computers, navigation and telemetry systems. A workhorse launch vehicle of ISRO, PSLV has launched nine successful consecutive flights till now since its first launch in 1994. It would also launch India's first mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1 in 2

Re: India's first commercial satellite launch. What exactly would be commercial about this satellite? :chin: Are we planning to use it for say cellphone technology, banking services and so on? Or are we going to use it for Weather forecasting like we normally do? It is of course great to see an Indian success, so congratulations are in order to ISRO. Good job :wtg: :wtg:

Commercial launching of satellites is big business .I believe the market for commercial satellite launch services is in the upwards of to 3 billion USD a year. India wants to compete with the United States, Russia, China etc in this market . In fact they charged 11 million dollars for this particular launch. BTW, have you tried this space.com. Actually , Lou Dobbs of CNN was one of the founding members . This is a great site and I frequently scour it.

Re: India's first commercial satellite launch. Antrix corp. (isro's commercial wing) has launched a few sats before using pslv -- including multiple satellites on the same mission. all under 500kg though. this one is special because it's in a Low-Earth Equitorial Orbit (LEEO), at an inclination of 2.5 degrees from the equator. The PSLV is not designed to do this -- it was designed to place sats in Low-Earth Polar Orbits (LEPO) which is 90 degrees inclination from the equator. they charged 2-3 times their regular rates (ie ~$30,000/kg instead of 10k) because of the difficulty of the orbital placement.
