Dhondy
1. The stomach produces concentrated hydrochloric acid. Yet it usually doesn't harm the lining of the stomach. 2. Your urine is acidic. 3. The nose grows longer throught your life. 4. Most of the foul smell in your f@rt is because of three gases- indoles, skatoles & marcaptans 5. The muscle with the longest name is called "Levator labi superioris aleque nasi". It makes you smile. 6. When you stand on one leg, your hip bears 2.5 times your body weight 7. The brain doesn't have any lymph vessels 8. The brain cannot use fat as a nutrient. It can only use glucose. 9. The body cannot convert protein into fat. 10. When you have a stroke involving the face, the muscle that wrinkles the forehead is the only one that escapes...because it has nerve supply from both sides. Lurker
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts Good ones Dhondy. Can you possibly put a few regarding genes? Geneology fascinates me no ends. I mean how is it possible to put so much information in so little? Information that quite literally shape a person's entire life? :chin:
kabira
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts Here it is Lurker The human genome contains 3164.7 million chemical nucleotide bases (A, C, T, and G) The order of almost all (99.9%) nucleotide bases are exactly the same in all people. The functions are unknown for over 50% of genes discovered to date. To a first approximation, most of our genes are NOT our own. In fact, only about 2% of the human genome seems to be made up of sequences that code for proteins or RNA. What about the remaining 98% of it? Guess where these sequences come from? Ultimately, most of them come from viruses. Our DNA is 98% identical to chimpanzees..
kabira
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts If all the DNA in your body was tied together, it would stretch to the sun and back over 600 times. If a person recited the genome at a rate of one nucleotide per second, 24 hours a day, it would take them a full century to complete. Chromosome Y (sex chromosome) has least number of genes...(No wonder all men are nikamas...just kidding)..
Lurker
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts Thanks Kabira. :wtg: Where/when does the origin of gene starts? Is it when a baby is conceived? Or is it from sperm and egg individually? I mean think it like this, attributes like eye colour, shape of biceps, rate of metabolism, hair etc can all be traced back to this simple and yet so complex thing called genes. I wonder if discovery of genes does/does not rank as one of the top 10 discoveries ever! :chin:
kabira
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts >Where/when does the origin of gene starts? Is it when a baby is conceived? Genes are nothing but sequence of nucleotides and this nucleotides are found inside a CELL.. Basically whenver there is a cell, there is gene->proteins (amino acids). Do you remember Mitosis and Meiosis??
The Outsider
Re: Ten Weird Medical Facts 1. The stomach produces concentrated hydrochloric acid. Yet it usually doesn't harm the lining of the stomach. That is facked up. Seriously. How does the stomach get away with it, Dhondy?
