Zal Irani Cup, 2010-11

Recommended Posts

What a sad start to the domestic season. One would expect better pitches for one of the most important matches of the season. But again, did anyone in BCCI even bother to check how the pitch for the Irani Trophy was being prepared. After some amazing wickets in Ranji Trophy last season, this has been a huge let down to start with.

Based on cricinfo "On a Jaipur pitch that offered no help to the bowlers, the Rest of India batsmen made merry on the opening day of the Irani Cup tie against Mumbai." If thats true, BCCI should really get more sporting pitches for these games. No wonder our domestic batsmen score tons of runs in the local matches, and are clueless when it comes to Intl matches. Good to see Sir Aggy in the scorecard :D

Caught some hilights of day 1 Pitch/Conditions : There wasnt any lateral movement off the pitch and looked to be a good batting track. Not much bounce either to test out the horizontal shots. The square was covered with grass which didnt help in reverse swing it seems either. There didnt seem to be any from whatever I saw. Pacers bowled a lot of full over pitched deliveries, trying to entice the edge but that did not work out. Both Mukund and Dhawan looked to be in great touch. Dhawan hit Agarkar for some glorious cover drives and a few straight drives as well. He was quite aggressive against the spinner, Abdullah, coming down the track and hitting over midwicket or just rocking on the backfoot and playing the pull shot. Poor length at times didnt help Abdullah on this day 1 placid wicket. On a rare bouncer from Agarkar, Dhawan was found to be in trouble and skied it but Malvi spilled the catch diving. Trying to be aggresive against a full toss from Rohit, he caught the fielder - unlucky you can say. Mukund's got a nifty 50+ domestic average and he did his reputation no harm on Day 1 scoring his 9th FC century. Look's like a compact player, plays mostly down the ground although doesnt mind guiding a few down the 3rd man or gully region. At times, gets caught on the crease without much footwork. Can play off both the back and front foot against the spinners. Likes the ondrive towards midwicket both on the front and back foot. So basically he can play all the vertical shots. Relies on good timing and looks fairly elegant in his batting approach. Badrinath was also in good touch - good cover drives against the spinners, and playing all the bowlers with ease. Poor catching and fielding by Mumbai on the whole. Regardless of the pitch, I dont think India's batting reserves are as bad as they are made out to be by some. Exposure from the India A tours will surely help these players out in their development. Not bad I must say.

Mukund vs Murali Vijay: Any comparisons? Salil used to say Abinav Mukund was a better batsman than M.Vijay. But not having watched A.M. its hard to say. They both (AM and MV) open for Tamil Nadu, and I've heard good things abt AM. But not sure why MV was preferred by Cheeka?
