Internet - What do you dislike about it?

I don't think I need to sell Internet as the greatest invention in past 25 odd years. Internet has changed world, and human beings, much more deeply and at breathtaking speed than anything else. Today every facet of life be it business, career, lifestyle has been influenced by it..heck you are reading these words thanks to Internet only. Suffice to say Internet is solid gold. Or is it? What are the changes brought about by Internet that you dislike? Could it be easy access for child predators? Or that every Tom, Di@k and Harry is an expert? From cybersex to becoming an internet-addict, what are some of the things which you do not like about Internet? Let me go first. One thing which I absolutely dislike is how it has rendered us all with a very short attention span. A couple of decades back if a sports magazine(Sportstar is still in circulation whiles the likes of Sportsweek and Sportsworld have long stopped) came out with an all-time Indian XI, they would not just put down 11 names. They would go in detail about who were the candidates for the opener slot, who was ultimately picked and why. It was no surprise hence that a selection of 11 players started with a nomination of 33 players or so. And the article was not half a page but often ran into 5-6. And you know what? Most readers lapped to it and didnt want the article to finish. I do not know if we have lost the great writers or maybe we just do not have enough time, but I dare say more people today would much rather scroll to the end of the article and check XI players than read why Kapil Dev ultimately scored over the all-round skills of Vinoo Mankad and Salim Durrani. So what do you dislike about Internet? xxxxx

Re: Internet - What do you dislike about it? I can't say there's anything I dislike about the internet (perhaps something may happen in the future to give me something to complain about), but it's changed my life so much... I was quite late to get properly into it. I only first started surfing it in 1999, and only started using it a lot in 2004. It's an amazing invention, I lived without it, but I know now that I could not live without it, having become so dependant on it. I use it for so much, and if I'm not working, or don't have any plans, I will be online...

Re: Internet - What do you dislike about it? Speaking of things you dislike about internet how about receiving emails at work where the subject contains the entire message? You know where the subject is "Swing by my desk at 10 am."...no Hi Hello etc etc.. Or do I belong to the minority who still believe in typing emails the way a letter is supposed to be :doh:

It does not have the emotion of a letter' date=' intimacy of a phone call, [b']excitedness of a morning newspaper.
Speaking of which, how long do you believe morning newspapers would survive? It doesnt seem like there is a room for them in modern society what with 500 different tv channels with dozens of 24 hour news channels. xxx

Re: Internet - What do you dislike about it? I dislike the spam and porn that comes with it. The millions of porn sites that seem to mushroom on a daily basis. Every word in the dictionary seems to be connected with a porn site on the internet these days.

The New York Times report fewer sales in printed newspapers year after year and are now struggling to generate enough revenue from advertising as they did before. By contrast, the ad revenue from their website has increased by more than 10%. It's indicative of the trend which sees more people gravitating towards the online version while rejecting the print.

Re: Internet - What do you dislike about it? Lurker, what you said is not true. If anything,it provides you with much much more details than what you mentioned. I vaguely remember my uncles sportstar/sportsworld collection from the 70s and 80s which, i think, came out every month. They would go into details like you mentioned but its basically because they had an entire month to discuss. But these days, the news comes out as soon as it happens. Take Dhoni being selected as the keeper in the BD tour in 2005(?). The monthly magazine back then, would first start with Dhoni's domestic records, his A team recaords and finally discuss his qualification for the national side. But the way it happened in 2005 was more in detail. Right after his A team performances, everyone knew about Dhoni and his call for inclusion became louder while the performances of the other keepers were discussed as well. So whatever could be covered in the monthly magazines was covered in episodic nature almost every week. Before the final 11 are selected, we already get the details about the candidates, their stats and about their love lifes. So what is the point of doing the same thing over again, once the fianl 11 are selected.

I dislike the spam and porn that comes with it. The millions of porn sites that seem to mushroom on a daily basis. Every word in the dictionary seems to be connected with a porn site on the internet these days.
I dont see what the problem is.

Reminds me of a very very embarassing story with my mom when i asked her to look up the movie Triple X. She said lots of screenshots..which i said was good...then she says that its lewd and i said 'its a bit sensual but nothing hoo-haa' ( thinking about that bedroom scene with Vin Diesel and that brown chick in East Europe mountains)...Mom got really pissed...rest of the story is too colorful to continue..but you get the drift where my gaffe took me to..

This is an excellent point. However, the internet isn't solely responsible for the proliferation of gobbledigook - the advent of SMS and Txt messaging on cell phones is arguably the primary cause of this. Sometimes i can just barely understand txt speak on my cellphone. ie; yesterday i got a message which said (quoting this verbatim); "Bro u wana com down 2 da lab tmorw nite". Freaks.

Re: Internet - What do you dislike about it? Leaving aside the pitiful quality of journalism, the popups are the main reason why i stopped frequenting online Indian newspapers. ToI is by far the worst...everytime i visited their page, my laptop would end up crashing.
